The following is a brief substance of the story of the drama :Manmatha, the God of Love, after having been burnt to ashes by God Śive, is said to have been born as the son of Saurirājapperumal, a form of Vişnu, worshipped in the shrine at Tirukkaņņapuram in the Tanjore district. Within ten days after the birth of the child, the demon Sambarāsura cast it into the sea where it was devoured by a fish which having been caught and cut open by the servants of the demon revealed a charming young child inside; and Ratī, who was born as the daughter of the demon, having come to know of this, ordered that the child should be carefully tended and brought up. When the child came of age, he killed the demon and married his daughter.
The drama is oalled Arthapañcaka because it embodies as stated in the last stanza five things-चिन्तायोग, समारम्भ, व्यापार, हेतुदशन, and अभीष्टलाभ in Aikas one to five, respectively. The author's name is not given. Beginning:
(श्रीवत्स)कौस्तुभाकल्पध्वान्तप्रद्योतयोमिथः । विरोधशातनीमाद्यां लक्ष्मी सन्ध्यामुपास्महे । कस्यापि शाखानिलयस्य मूले नाम्भः पिबन्ती न तृणा(न्यदन्ती)। . . . . . . वतीर्णा गौः संनिदध्यादमृतं दुहाना ।।
(नान्द्यन्ते सूत्रधारः) सू-(समन्तादवलोक्य सहर्षम् ) अहो संप्रति प्रत्यासन्न एषोऽस्मदाशिषामुल्लासिकसमयः । येन भगवच्चै(त्रोत्सव)यात्रायामभिवर्तते विदग्धा परिषदेषा । तदेनामनुरूपेण रूकपेणारिराधयिषुरस्मि ।
(प्रविश्य नटः चीटिकां ददाति) सू-(गृहीत्वा) मारिष कुत एषा (चीटिका) । नटः-महाअणप्पसादादो ।
