This Vrata consists in worshipping Parvati on the day corresponding to that on which she is said to have come into existence again after having burnt up her body in a sacrificial ceremony performed by Dakṣa. Parvati is here considered to possess a body having the fragrance of the Utpala flower. Hence the name
Utpalagauri.
