This Vrata consists in the wo: ship of Sakti as Candika for nine days, commencing from the first day of the bright fortnight in the month of Asvina. This is what is commonly known as the Dussera worship, and is intended to be conducted specially by kings before starting out on their expeditions of victory at the conclusion of the rainy season.
Beginning :
प्राणानायम्य देशकालौ सङ्कीर्त्य मम चतुर्विधपुरुषार्थ फलसिद्ध्यर्थं प्रतिपदमारभ्य नवमीपर्यन्तं नवरात्रित्रतङ्करिष्ये इति सङ्कल्प्य नवरात्रकर्म कुर्यात् । मार्कण्डेयपुराणे उत्तराध्याये उक्तम् । शृणु राजन् प्रवक्ष्यामि चण्डिकार्चनमुत्तमम् । आश्विनस्य सिते पक्षे प्रथमादिनवस्वपि ॥ सुनातस्तिलतैलेन पूर्वाह्वेन नृपोत्तम ।

शेषजलं नद्यामुत्सृजेत् । हेमरूपिणीं प्रतिमां स्वगृहे पूजयेत् । अपराधसहस्राणि क्रियन्तेऽहर्निशं मया ।
दासोऽयमिति मां मत्वा क्षमस्व परमेश्वरि ॥ इति पठित्वा यथासुखं विहरेत् ॥
