The work contains four Skandhas: ET FPT, Adhyāyas 1 to 34 ; 372TFFT, Adhyâyas 1 to 23; 574 Fret, Adhyāyas 1 to 14; 199 Fret, Adhyâyas 1 to 19.
This is a compilation from the Purăņas classified under the heads of the four objects of human pursuit. Bukka, having requested his minister Mādhava to instruct him about the objects of human pursuit in the words of Vyāsa as found in the Puranas and the Mahābbärata, Madhava directed his younger brother to quote and explain to the king the various extracts from the Purānas about धर्म, अर्थ, काम and मोक्ष. Sayana is des. cribed herein as the younger brother of Madhava and as the expounder of the work composed by Mādbava. But at the end Mādhava himself is spoken of as the person who instructed the king.
The worth of this work cannot be over-estimated. From the miscellaneous mass of the Purāņas much useful and important information is culled and collected in this work, which is given almost in the very words of the Puräņas. Beginning :
सत्यैकस्थविवेकवान् द्विगुणधीस्व्यर्थी चतुर्वेदिता पञ्चस्कन्धकृतिष्षडन्वयदृढस्सप्ताङ्गसर्वार्थगः ।
अष्टव्यक्तिकलाधरो नवनिधिः पुष्यद्दशप्रत्ययः स्मारृच्छ्रायधुरन्धरो विजयताच्छी(तां श्री)बुक्कपृथ्वीपतिः ।।
