________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir (xiv) BRHASPATI SURI: Another notable Smrti writer of Orissa of the early period was Bphaspati Suri, the manuscript of whose work called 'Ketya Kaumudi' are found in all parts of Orissa. There are three manuscripts of this work (Dh/55, Dh/59(b), Dh/62) in the manuscripts library of the Orissa State Museum. This work does not furnish any reliable clue to fix the date of its anthor with some amount of certainty. But the following Smrti writers an-l smrti works cita) by hin deserve mention here as they may prove helpful in this matter: 1) Jimutavahana (2) Vijnanesvara, (3) Rajamartanda, (4) Lakshmidhara, (5) Satanandasamgraha, (6) Smrti mimamsa, (7) Smrti samuchchaya, (8) Smotisara. of these Nos, 2, 3, 4, 5 can definitely be assigned to a period prior to 1200 A. D. Smrti samuchchaya by Sannkhadhara cites Smstichandrika. (first part of the 13th century) and is quoted by Hemadri (1270-1300 A, D.) So it may be placed near about 1250 A. D. Jimuta vahana who makes a large mmber of quotations from Smrtisamuchchava may be assigned to a period from 1250-1300 A,D. Bphaspati Suri who mentions Jimutavahana certainly flourished after 1300 A. D. If this Smstisara quoted twice in the Krtya Kaumudi is taken to be the work of the same name' by the Maithila Harinatha Upadhyaya, who flourished in the first part of the 14th century, then the time of Brhaspati may fall after 1350 A. D. In the topics on 14 Bphaspati does not mention the celebrated Marlhavachirya or his work, which is invariably referrel t7 by all the Smrti-writers that came after Machava. This is significant and leads one to the conclusion that Bphaspati was either a contemporary of Madhava or might have lived a few years before him. Until the contrary is proved he may be placed in the middle of the 14th century, when Kaladarka was still holding the grouni. Krtyakaumudi is divided into three 9*Tur or sections, the first one covering nearly three fourths of the work is called 'Fifaq TO?" the other two being 'प्रायश्चित्त प्रकरण' and 'दामप्रकरण' The topics discussed and authorities quoted have been given on its proper place. Among the later Smrti writers Visvanatha Migra and Krshna Misra are so far known to have quote:l from Krtyakaunzli in their respective works namely FierATE an l *IZAVET.
