For variants see Appendix I (p. 2) and Appendix II (p.5). In this connection the following remark has been made by the late Prof. William Dwight Whitney in his work entitled "A Sanskrit Grammar" (p. 4):
"The hook above, turning to the left or to the right, is historically the essential part of the character, having been originally the whole of it; the hooks were only later prolonged, so as to reach all the way down beside the consonant. In the MSS., they almost never have the horizontal stroke drawn across them above, though this is added in all the printed forms of the characters." See fol. 10% of No. 687 of 1899–1915 (311&latutafit fala). The corresponding numerals in Hindi are 3,4,5 and & respectively.
