Indrajālaṁ aham manye samsāre 'sāra-sāgare kartā ko 'tra mahābāho sarvas vada mama prabho ||
(Garuda Purāņa Uttarakanda 22. 4) 9. In the following passages, the word saṁsāra is replaced by loka, jagat, etc. nihsāram paśyato lokaṁ toya-budbuda-durbalam
(Saundarānanda 15.63ab) Yataś ca lokaṁ samajanma-nistham paśyāmi niņsāraṁ asac ca sarvam ||
(Saundarānanda 18. 17ab) asāram asvantam aniścitam jagaj jagaty anitye balam avyavasthitam .
(Saundarānanda 9. 16cd) Paumaraha-rāyā vi muniūna asārattaṁ jīva-loyassa .
(Jacobi p.46, line 30) 10. The first part of the verse is quoted in Mahāyāna-sūtrālaṁkāra (ed., by S.Levi vi p.82) with a hidden, and enigmatic meaning (abhisamdhi)
Asäre sära-matayo viparyāse ca susthitāḥ |
kleśena ca susamklistā labhante bodhim uttamām || - Here, asāra is used in the sense of samādhi and sāra in the sense of visāraś cetasaḥ=viksepa. Cf. also E. Lamotte. La Somme du Grand Vehicule d'Asanga (Mahāyāna-samgraha) II (Louvain 1973) p.132. I owe this reference to M.
Hattori. 11. Cf. also asāre sāra-yogaññā matim na tv-eva vindati sārabho va giri-duggasmim antarā yeva sidati ||
| (Hansa-Jậtaka 502.24) 12. Cf. Udānavarga 29.3-4,
Asāre sāra-matayaḥ sāre cāsāra-samjñinah | te sära nädhigacchanti mithyā-samkalpa-gocarāḥ || sāram tu sārato jñātvā hy asaraṁ cāpy asaratah |
te sāram adhigacchanti samyak-samkalpa-gocarāḥ 11 For a further reference, see F. Bernhard Udānavarga (Göttingen 1965) pp. 366-7 and K.Mizuno, Studies in the Dhammapada (Tokyo 1981) pp. 86-7. .
