________________ An Introduction to Jain Philosophy 163 seeing. He knew and saw the grades mutations of all the worlds including those of the gods, men, and titan's etc. The life of Lord Mahavira is full of revolution, Mahavira himself was an embodiment of revolution. He led the people from darkness to light and taught them the art of living. He not only radically changed the social life of those days but also the mental pattern of life of the people and that is still influencing the people today. He endeavors and succeeded in completely changing the society by the over-all progress of an individual. There is no doubt Mahavira was a great teacher, but it is a misfortunate that we have got no direct information regarding his gospel. All our information is secondary and comes from the Acāryas. The Ācāryas says that whatever they say is the word of Sarvagya, but how can we convince others of this truth in the absence of any direct proof? The Jaina Literature, as given by our Ācāryas, is likely to make them hesitate from taking it for granted that they say the word of Sarvagya. Mahavira teachings are embedded in canonical texts Angas, and they are interpreted by series of commentaries known as Niryukti, Cūrņis, Bhāşya and Tīkās. Individual topics are discussed in manuals and further illustrated by extensive narrative literatures. The Angas come in the course of time to be known and acknowledge as the only authoritative sacred books of Jainism. They were expressly referred in the Sūtrakstānga as the 'Canon of the Jainas', which has been taught, produced and declared by the 'Sramaņas, the Nirgranthas'. The Digambras, however, refuse to recognize the authenticity of the Angas. The Angas are the main set of text upon which we should rely in giving an account and estimate of Mahavira teachings. Mahavira messages are mainly based on the concept of selfrealization for ultimate attainment of Mokşa. Mokşa, the ultimate objective of his teaching is how one can attain total freedom from the cycle of birth, life, pain, misery, and death, and achieve the permanent blissful state of one's self. This is also known as liberation, nirvāna, absolute freedom. Mokşa is a real state of sukha or bliss. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
