વર્ણવ્યવસ્થા જન્મથી કે કર્મથી ?
“ It is clear and we all know it, however, devoted our belief in the Hindu faith may be, that the four castes of the old time are not really amongst us to-day. If we test them by the test of the Shastras, if we test them by the test of the Lawgiver, we shall find that they are shams to a very large extent, as much a sham and a farce in the East as the titles of the nobility are a sham and a farce in the West."*

કાઈ કહી શકશે કે આ ખાઈ હિન્દુધર્મ વિરુદ્ધ એક ક્ષણ વાર પણ ભૂલ કરે એમ છે? પ્રસંગેાપાત્ત અત્રે એ પણ ઊમેરીશું કે જે વર્ગ ઉપરના અમારા આક્ષેપ આ ચર્ચાના વિષય થઈ પડયા છે. તે વગ ઉપર જ એ આ અધાતિના આરંભની જવાબદારી મૂકે છે. એ કહે છેઃ——
“ભાઈઓ ! હું તમને કહું છું—અને મ્હારા તમને મ્હાંએમ્ડો સ્પષ્ટ કહેવાના હક છે, કારણ પશ્ચિમ દેશમાં જ્યાં તમારા ઉપર આક્ષેપ થાય છે ત્યાં હું તમારા બચાવ કરૂં છું—કે આ અધઃપાતની શરૂઆત, જે વર્ણ સથી ઉમદામાં ઉમદા હોવી જોઈએ, પવિત્ર હૈાવી જોઈ એ, જેસથી ઉચ્ચ હાવી જોઈએ, ત્યાંથી જ થાય છે. '×
હવે અમે પૂછીશું કે જો આ પ્રમાણે સ્પષ્ટ ખરેખરૂં એકલી દેવાના હક

“ હિંદુધર્મમાં આપણી ગમે તેવી દૃઢ શ્રદ્ધા હોય તેપણુ એટલું તેા ખુલ્લું છે અને એ આપણે સ જાણીએ છીએ કે પ્રાચીન સમયનું ચાતુવેણ્યું આજ આપણામાં ખરેખરૂં જોતાં નથી જ. આપણે એને શાસ્ત્રોની કસોટીથી તપાસીએ, શાસ્ત્રકાર (મનુ)ની કસેાટીથી તપાસીએ, તે! જણાશે કે તે ણે ભાગે ઢોંગ જ છે, પશ્ચિમમાં જેમ અમીરાના ખિતામા ઢાંગ અને ફારસ જ છે તેમ અન્ને વર્ણવ્યવસ્થા પણ ઢાંગ અને ફારસ જ છે.”
