वाग्दानम् - वाग्दान ।
विवाहमासतः पूर्व वाग्दानं क्रियते बुधैः । कलशेन समायुक्तं सम्पूज्य गणनायकम् ॥ ४२ ॥ सन्निधौ द्विजदेवानां कन्या मम सुताय ते । त्वया क्रियतामद्य सुरूपा दीयते मया ॥ ४३ ॥ पुत्रमित्रसुहृद्वगैः समवेतेन निश्चितम् ।
कायेन मनसा वाचा सम्प्रीत्या धर्मवृद्धये ॥ ४४ ॥
विवाह-महीने से पहले वाग्दान करना चाहिए। उस समय कलशकी और गणनायक - आचाकी पूजा करना भी जरूरी है । कन्याका पिता वरके पितासे प्रार्थना करे कि मैं आग, देव और द्विजके संनिकट, पुत्र मित्र बंधु बांधवोंकी सम्मति से अपनी सुरूपवती गुणवती कन्याको धर्मकी बढ़वारीके निमित्त तुम्हारे पुत्रके लिए मनसे, वचनसे, कायसे प्रीतिपूर्वक देता हूं; जिसे आप स्वीकार कीजिए || ४२-४४ ॥

कन्या ते मम पुत्राय स्वीकृतेयं मयाऽद्य वै ।
एतेषां सन्निधावेव मम वंशाभिवृद्धये ॥ ४५ ॥
इसके बदलेमें वरका पिता बोले कि मैं आज इन सबके समक्ष अपने वंशकी वृद्धि के निमित्त तुम्हारी कन्याको अपने पुत्रके लिए स्वीकार करता हूं ॥ ४५ ॥ सम्बन्धगोत्रमुच्चार्य दद्याद्वै कन्यां पिता ।
हस्ते पितुर्वरस्याथ ताम्बूलं साक्षतं फलम् ॥ ४६ ॥ दास्येऽहं तेऽद्य पुत्राय सुरूपां मम कन्यकाम् । आसादय विवाहार्थं द्रव्यमांगलिकानि च ॥ ४७ ॥ स्वीकृता मम पुत्राय मयाऽद्य तव पुत्रिका । सफलं साक्षतं दद्याद्यथाचारं परस्परम् ॥ ४८ ॥
कन्याका पिता - संबंध ( पितामह आदिके नाम ) और गोत्रोंका उच्चारण कर कन्याको देवे और वरके पिता के हाथमें तांबूल, अक्षत और फल देवे । तथा कहे कि मैं आज तुम्हारे पुत्रके लिए अपनी सुन्दर कन्याको देता हूं | आप विवाहके अर्थ मंगल द्रव्यों को सम्पादन कीजिए | इसके बद - लेमें वरका पिता कहे हि मैंने आज तुम्हारी कन्या अपने पुत्रके लिए स्वीकार की है । अनंतर लौकिक अथवा जातीय रिवाजके अनुसार आपसमें फल अक्षत पुष्प आदि देवें । इस तरह वाग्दान अर्थात् सगाई की जाती है ॥ ४६-४८
अथ प्रदानं --- प्रदानविधि | कन्याया वरणात्पूर्व प्रदानं चैव कारयेत् ।
सम्पूज्य कन्यकां दद्याद्वखालङ्कारभूषिताम् ।। ४९ ।। मदानं पट्टकूलादि कर्णकण्ठादिभूषणम् । लब्ध्वाऽऽशिषोऽथ विमेभ्यस्तेभ्यो दद्यात्फलानि च ॥ ५० ॥
