स्वामी समन्तभद्र। इसका प्रधान कारण यथेष्ट साधनसामग्रीकी अप्राप्ति है । समाज अपने प्रमादसे, यद्यपि, अपनी बहुतसी ऐतिहासिक सामग्रीको खो
चुका है फिर भी जो अवशिष्ट है वह भी कुछ कम नहीं है। परंतु वह इतनी अस्तव्यस्त तथा इधर उधर बिखरी हुई है और उसको मालूम करने तथा प्राप्त करनेमें इतनी अधिक विघ्नबाधाएँ उपस्थित होती हैं कि उसका होना न होना बराबर हो रहा है । वह न तो अधिकारियोंके स्वयं उपयोगमें आती है, न दूसरोंको उपयोगके लिये दी जाती है और इसलिये उसकी दिनपर दिन तृतीया गति (नष्टि ) होती रहती है, यह बड़े ही दुःखका विषय है ! ____ साधनसामग्रीकी इस विरलताके कारण ऐतिहासिक तत्त्वोंके अनुसंधान और उनकी जाँचमें कभी कभी बड़ी ही दिक्कतें पेश आती हैं और कठिनाइयाँ मार्ग रोककर खड़ी हो जाती हैं । एक नामके कई कई और विद्वान् हो गये हैं; एक विद्वान् आचार्यके जन्म, दीक्षा, गुणप्रत्यय
और देशप्रत्ययादिके भेदसे कई कई नाम अथवा उपनाम भी हुए हैं; ___ १ जैसे, पद्मनन्दि ' और ' प्रभाचन्द्र ' आदि नामोंके धारक बहुत से
आचार्य हुए हैं । ' समन्तभद्र ' नामके धारक भी कितने ही विद्वान् हो गये हैं, जिनमें कोई ‘लघु ' या 'चिक, कोई 'अभिनव', कोई 'गेरुसोप्पे, ' कोई 'भट्टारक ' और कोई ‘गृहस्थ ' समन्तभद्र कहलाते थे। इन सबके समयादिका कुछ परिचय लेखककी लिखी हुई रत्नकरण्डकश्रावकाचारकी प्रस्तावनामें, ' ग्रंथपर संदेह ' शीर्षकके नीचे, दिया गया है । स्वामी समन्तभद्र इन सबसे भिन्न थे और वे बहुत पहले हो गये हैं।
