"महात्माओंमें भगवान्समन्तभद्र स्वामीका आसन बहुत ऊँचा है । ऐसा शायद कोई ही अभागा जैनी होगा जिसने आपका पवित्र नाम न सुना हो; परंतु समाजका अधिकांश भाग ऐसा जरूर है जो आपके निर्मल गुणों और पवित्र जीवनवृत्तान्तोंसे बहुत ही कम परिचित हैबल्कि यों कहिये कि, अपरिचित, है अपने एक महान् नेता और ऐसे नेताके विषयमें जिसे 'जिनशासनका प्रणेता' तक लिखा है समाजका इतना भारी अज्ञान बहुत ही खटकता है। हमारी बहुत दिनोंसे इस बातकी बराबर इच्छा रही है कि आचार्यमहोदयका एक सच्चा इतिहास-उनके जीवनका पूरा वृत्तान्त—लिखकर लोगोंका यह अज्ञान भाव दूर किया जाय । परंतु बहुत कुछ प्रयत्न करने पर भी हम अभी तक अपनी उस इच्छाको पूरा करनेके लिये समर्थ नहीं हो सके। . १ देखो श्रवणबेल्गोलका शिलालेख नं० १०८ (नया नं० २५८)।
