सप्तरात्रमध्ये चौरं निजशिरो वाऽऽनय । ततश्चौरमलभमानश्चिन्तापरः तलारोऽपराह्ने बुभुक्षितब्राह्मणेन चैकदागत्य भोजनं प्रार्थितः । तेनोक्तंहे ब्राह्मण ! छन्दसोऽसि मम प्राणसन्देहो वर्तते त्वं च भोजनं प्रार्थयसें एतद्वचनमाकर्ण्य पृष्टं ब्राह्मणेन कुतस्ते प्राणसन्देहः ? । कथितं च तेन । तदाकर्ण्य पुनः पृष्टं ब्राह्मणेन-अत्र किं कोऽप्यतिनिस्पृहपुरुषोऽ प्यस्ति ? उक्तं तलारेण-अस्ति विशिष्टतपस्वी, न च तस्यैतत् सम्भाव्यते । भणितं ब्राह्मणेन स एव चौरो भविष्यति अतिनिस्पृहत्वात् । श्रूयतामत्र मदीयां कथां-मम ब्राह्मणी महासती परपुरुषशरीरं न स्पृशतीति निजपुत्रस्याप्यतिकुक्कुटात् कर्पटेन सर्व शरीरं प्रच्छाद्य स्तनं दादाति। रात्रौ तु गृहपिण्डारेण सह कुकम करोति । तद्दशनात् संजातवैरोग्याऽहं संवलार्थ सुवर्णशलाकां वंशयष्टिमध्ये निक्षिप्य तीर्थयात्रायां निर्गतः । अप्रे गच्छतश्च मभैकबटुको मिलितो न तस्य विश्वासं गच्छाम्यहं यष्टिरक्षां यत्नतः करोमि । तेनाऽऽकलितां यष्टिं. संगे बिभर्मि । एकदा रात्रौ कुंभकारगृहे निद्रां कृत्वा दूराद्गत्वा तेन निजमस्तके लग्नं कुथिततृणमालोक्यातिकुक्कुटे ममानतो, हा हा मया नोक्तं परतणमदत्तं प्रसितमित्युक्त्वा व्याघुटय तृणं तत्रैव कुंभकारगृहे निक्षिप्य दिवसावसाने कृतभोजनस्य ममागत्य मिलितः । भिक्षार्थ गच्छतस्तस्यातिशुचिरयमिति मत्वा विश्वसितेन मया यष्टिः कुक्कुरादिवारणार्थ समर्पिता । तां गृहीत्वा स गतः ( २ )। ततो मया महाटव्यां गच्छतातिवृद्धपक्षिणोऽतिकुर्कुटं दृष्टं यथा एकस्मिन् महति वृक्षे मिलिताः पक्षिगणो रात्रावेकेनातिवृद्धपक्षिणा निजभाषया भणितो रे रे पुत्राः ? अहं अतीव गन्तुं न शक्नोमि बुभुक्षितमनाः कदाचिद्भवत्पुत्राणां भक्षणं करोमि चित्तचापल्यादतो मम मुखं -- १ शाम्बलार्थमिति ख, ग।
