“प्रोषधशब्दः पर्व पर्यायवाची, प्रोषधे उपवासः प्रोषधोपवासः ।" इत्यादि

“प्रोषधे पर्वण्युपवासः प्रोषधोपवासः ।" — श्लोकवार्तिक 1 " पर्वाणि प्रोषधान्याहुर्मासे चत्वारि तानि च " इत्यादि — यशस्तिलक | “प्रोषधः पर्व पर्यायवाची । पर्वणि चतुर्विधाहारनिवृत्तिः प्रोषधोपवासः " । - चारित्रसार । " इह प्रोषधशब्दः रूढया पर्वसु वर्तते । पर्वाणि चाष्टम्यादितिथयः पूरणात्प- श्र० प्र० टीकरयां हरिभद्रः । बहुत कुछ छानबीन करनेपर भी दूसरा ऐसा कोई भी ग्रंथ हमारे देखने में नहीं आया जिसमें प्रोषधका अर्थ ' सकृद्भुक्ति' और प्रोषधोपवासका अर्थ सुकृद्भुक्तिपूर्वक उपवास' किया गया हो । प्रोषधका अर्थ ' सकृद्भुक्ति' नहीं है, यह बात खुद स्वामी समंतभद्रके निम्न वाक्यसे भी प्रकट होती है जो इसी ग्रंथ में बादको 'प्रोषधोपवास' प्रतिमाका स्वरूप प्रतिपादन करनेके लिये दिया गया है—

पर्वदिनेषु चतुर्ष्वपि मासे मासे स्वशक्तिमनिगुह्य । प्रोषधनियमविधायी प्रणधिपरः प्रोषधानशनः ॥

अब हम उन पद्यपर विचार करते हैं जो अधिकांश लोगोंकी शंकाका विषय बने हुए हैं। वे पद्य दृष्टांतोंवाले पद्य हैं और उनकी संख्या ग्रंथ में छह पाई जाती हैं । इनमें से ' तावदंजन ' और ' ततो जिनेंद्रभक्त ' नामके पहले दो पद्योंमें सम्यग्दर्शनके निःशंकितादि अष्ट अंगोंमें प्रसिद्ध होनेवाले आठ व्यक्तियोंके नाम दिये हैं । ' मातंगो धनदेवश्च नामके तीसरे पद्य में पांच व्यक्तियोंके नाम देकर यह सूचित किया है कि इन्होंने उत्तम पूजातिशयको प्राप्त किया है । परंतु किस विषयमें ? इसका उत्तर पूर्व पयसे सम्बंध मिलाकर यह दिया जा सकता है कि अहिंसादि पंचाणुत्रतोंके पालन के विषय में ।
