________________ NOTES-VIII. iv. 288–295. Hemacanda asks, what is that dialect ? and replies that that dialect is obtained by the application of this rule and not the next rule. The meaning is that in terrat” Nom. sing. ends in 5 as in atrast, but and are not changed to a and 37 as is required by the next rule nor any other phonetic change described later. Thus in stanî we have it for ati, è anda for # dret: and not ad, et animat etc. 288. Tanda are respectively changed to 3 and 7 in FriTaft. This also is one of the fundamental rules of this dialect. शालशे stands for सारसः and पुलिशे for पुरुषः लहशवश etc.; the Sanskrit rendering of the verse is : THTH-TR7-275-59-later-fames HETT-TT Station: वीरजिनः प्रक्षालयतु मम सकल मवद्यजम्बालम् ॥ “ May are, the Conqueror, wash away all dirt (FRA) of sinful deeds, — the Conqueror, whose pair of feet are decked by #rete flowers dropped down (famia ) from heads of gods bent ( before him ) in haste. " This verse ilustrates all the characteristics of the dialect, namely, the change of T, 7, 2, 7, 9 to 3, ?, ?, 4, 54 and Nom. sing. ing. 289-298. These Sutras describe the changes that conjuncts undergo in arrat. From these rules it will be seen that the operation of the process of assimilation is suspended in traff. Thus we can have in IT conjuncts like Fa, F9, FT, FE, F, 27, F5 and a which are not found in other Prakrit dialects. It may be remarked here that the Atiraf passages found in dramas do not always observe these rules about conjuncts probably because copyists did not know them. 292. ज, द्य and य become य in मागधी. In महाराष्ट्री य is changed to g, but in this dialect it is not allowed. Initial also is changed to ; e. g. quee for wate: 1937 is T4177544 and याणवत्त 15 यानपात्र, a boat. 295. Non-initial 3 is changd to a; e. g., 72 for 1709.
