## Chapter 90: Explanation of the Names Synonymous with Kṣaya

**Rāga** is called **Sneha** when it is accompanied by **Praṇidhāna**. **Anurāga** is the excess of **Sneha**. **Āśā** is the desire for something that does not exist. Or, **Āśā** is that which makes the soul **Kṛśa** (thin). **Iccha** is the desire for external and internal possessions. **Mūrchā** is the intense desire (**Abhidhvanga**) to possess something. **Gṛddhi** is the continuous increase or excessive thirst for a desired possession. **Sāśata** is the result or **Sprhā** accompanied by **Āśā**. Or, **Sāśvata** is the feeling of **Śasvat** (eternal). That is, **Sāśvata** is the **Lobha** result that remains forever. The reason for calling **Lobha** as **Sāśvata** is that the **Lobha** result remains constant from before and after the acquisition of the possession until one becomes **Vītarāga**. **Prārthanā** is the intense desire for wealth. **Lālasā** is the internal increase in the desire for possession. **Avirati** is the absence of the result of giving up possession. Or, **Avirati** is also a name for **Asamyama**. **Lobha** is the main cause of all kinds of **Asamyama**, therefore **Avirati** is also considered a synonym for **Lobha**. **Tṛṣṇā** is the thirst for objects. "**Vedya** **Vedana** **vā** **Vidya**" - that which continuously experiences **Vedana** or **Anubhavana** due to past **Saṁskāra** is called **Vidya**. In this way, compared to the meaning of **Niructi**, worldly beings continuously experience the feeling of **Lobha** **Kṣaya** due to their desire for acquiring, protecting, etc., possessions. Therefore, the name **Vidya** for **Lobha** is meaningful. Or, that which is as difficult to obtain as **Vidya**. Just as obtaining **Vidya** is very difficult, obtaining wealth also requires a lot of effort. **Jihvā** is also a synonym for **Lobha**. The reason for calling **Lobha** as **Jihvā** is that just as the **Jihvā** (tongue) desires to eat various beautiful and delicious foods upon seeing or hearing their names, similarly, upon seeing or hearing the stories of worldly, excellent, enjoyable, and beneficial things, beings become very greedy for their acquisition. In this way, **Jihvā** is given to **Lobha** due to the similarity of **Upamārtha**. One should know these twenty names of **Lobha**.
