## Chapter 69: Explanation of the Yavam Madhya (Middle of Barley) in the Kshaya Udaya Sthan (Place of Arise of Passions)
**593**
* **289.** The Kshaya Udaya Sthan (Place of Arise of Passions) are to be known as countless parts, without any difference.
* **290.** This is how it is:
* **291.** The Kshaya Udaya Sthan are countless in number.
* **292.** As many Tiryag (non-human) beings there are, so many Kshaya Udaya Sthan are filled with Tiryag beings.
* **293.** In the Kshaya Udaya Sthan, the Jivas (souls) reside in the middle of barley.
* **294.** As many Kshaya Udaya Sthan there are, so many barley grains there are.
* **295.** The barley grains are of different sizes.
* **296.** In these countless places, there are Tiryag beings.
* **297.** Then again, in another place, one Jiva is born.
* **298.** Then again, in countless places, there are Tiryag beings.
* **299.** Then again, in another place, one Jiva is born.
* **300.** Thus, going up, the Jivas, in one place, are born in countless parts of the barley grain.
**Commentary:**
* **10.** It is like this: The Kshaya Udaya Sthan are countless in number. As many Tiryag beings there are, so many Kshaya Udaya Sthan are filled with Tiryag beings. (290-292)
**Explanation:**
* As many regions there are in countless worlds, so many Kshaya Udaya Sthan are there for Tiryag beings. In each Kshaya Udaya Sthan, one Tiryag being resides. This state is possible only in a specific time, because only a countless part of the barley grain is filled with Jivas in the Kshaya Udaya Sthan, as per the teachings. This is what Jayadhavala says. Therefore, the meaning of this sutra should be understood as: As many Jivas there are, so many Kshaya Udaya Sthan are always filled with Tiryag beings, in a continuous or intermittent manner. This statement should be understood in relation to the present time.
Now, to explain the order of the Jivas in the Kshaya Udaya Sthan in relation to the past, the next sutra says:
**Commentary:**
* In relation to the past, the Tiryag beings in the Kshaya Udaya Sthan reside in the form of the middle of barley. In the lowest Kshaya Udaya Sthan, the Tiryag beings are the least in number. In the second Kshaya Udaya Sthan, the Tiryag beings are the same in number. In this way, in countless places, the Jivas are the same in number. Then again, in the next place, one Jiva is more than the previous number. Then again, in countless places, the Tiryag beings are the same in number. Then again, in the next place, one Jiva is more than the previous number. In this way, as one Jiva increases, in one Kshaya Udaya Sthan, countless parts of the barley grain are filled with Tiryag beings. (293-300)
* **1.** It is said that as many Tiryag beings there are in the sky, so many Kshaya Udaya Sthan are there. (Jayadhavala)
* **2.** Why? Because the Jivas, who are transformed by the defilements of all beings, are found in many barley grains. (Jayadhavala)
* The *Tamra Patra Vali* manuscript has included the phrase "Jivahin Uchajogaddhadanam Asankheja Bhaga Avirhidha" in the commentary of this sutra (see page 1661). But the authenticity of this phrase is confirmed only by the commentary.
