English Translation (preserving Jain terms):
(11) In one bhava-grahana (acquisition of one existence) and in one kasaya (passions), how many upayogas (modes of operation) are there?
In one upayoga (mode of operation) and in one kasaya, how many bhavas (existences) are there? (64)
(12) In which kasaya, how many varganas (categories) of upayoga are there? And of what kind and how extensive are the varganas in a gati (state of existence)? (65)
The Churnikara (commentator) will also decide the resolution of this question later. In this way, this gatha (verse) describes the three meanings mentioned above.
The special meaning is as follows:
The implication of saying "in one bhava-grahana (acquisition of one existence)" is that among the four gatis (states of existence) like hell, etc., when a particular bhava (existence) is acquired, within the duration of that specific state, how many upayogas (modes of operation) are there in relation to any one of the kasayas (passions) like anger, etc.? Are they enumerable or innumerable? In the particular bhava-grahana (acquisition of one existence) where the upayogas of a particular kasaya are enumerable or innumerable, how many are the upayogas of the remaining kasayas? Are they just equal to that, or more or less than that? This kind of meaning is contained in the first half of this gatha.
The implication of the question "in one upayoga (mode of operation) and in one kasaya, how many bhavas (existences) are there" is that here, considering the enumerable or innumerable upayogas related to the kasayas like anger, etc. as the basis, again how many past bhavas (existences) are there in them? In this way, by considering the bhavas as the subject matter, information about the anuyogadvara (inquiry method) related to their paucity or abundance is provided. The resolution of this will be done later through the Churni-sutras (commentary verses).
In which kasaya, how many varganas (categories) of upayoga are there? And of what kind and how extensive are the varganas in a gati (state of existence)? (65)
The special meaning is as follows:
Vargana means a division or a distinction. These varganas are of two types - kalopayoga-vargana (temporal categories of operation) and bhavopayoga-vargana (qualitative categories of operation). Among these, kalopayoga-vargana refers to the continuous gradations of modes of operation from the minimum to the maximum duration of the kasayas, in relation to time. Bhavopayoga-vargana refers to the gradations of modes of operation from the minimum to the maximum intensity, in relation to the states of the kasayas like intense, mild, etc. To describe both these types of varganas, the three anuyogadvara (inquiry methods) of prarUpaNa (exemplification), pramANa (measurement), and alpabahutva (paucity or abundance) are indicated in this gatha. Among them, the query "in which kasaya, how many upayoga-varganas are there" provides the indication of the anuyogadvara related to the pramANa (measurement) of both types of varganas. And, "of what kind and how extensive are the varganas in a gati (state of existence)" provides the indication of the anuyogadvara related to the prarUpaNa (exemplification) of the varganas.
