## Chapter 58: Nature of the Transition State
**291**
**155.** When the twenty-one-karma-bound being attains liberation in this very life, eighteen-natured transition state occurs. This continues until the six *nokaṣāya* remain unliberated.
**156.** Why does the seventeen-natured transition state not occur?
**157.** The *kṣapaka* (destroyer) with twenty-one *pratikrti* destroys eight *kṣapaya* (minor karmas) with a single blow.
**158.** When eight *kṣapaya* are destroyed from the twenty-one-natured transition state, the thirteen-natured transition state occurs.
**159.** Similarly, when the six karmas are liberated from the twenty-one-karma-bound being, the twelve-natured transition state occurs.
**160.** When the six karmas are liberated from the twenty-four-karma-bound being, the fourteen-natured transition state occurs.
**161.** Due to these reasons, the seventeen-natured, sixteen-natured, and fifteen-natured transition states do not occur.
**162.** The fourteen-natured transition state occurs when the six karmas are liberated from the twenty-four-karma-bound being, and the *puruṣavedaka* (male karma) remains unliberated.
**163.** The thirteen-natured transition state occurs when the *puruṣavedaka* is liberated from the twenty-four-karma-bound being, and the eight *kṣapaya* remain unliberated.
**164.** The thirteen-natured transition state also occurs for the *kṣapaka* when the eight *kṣapaya* are destroyed, until the *anānupaūrvī-saṃkrama* (transition without sequence) occurs.
**165.** When the twenty-one-natured being attains liberation in the *upaśāmaka* (pacifying) *napuṃsaka-vedaka* (neuter karma), and the *strī-vedaka* (female karma) remains unliberated, the nineteen-natured transition state occurs. When the twenty-one-natured being attains liberation in the *upaśāmaka* *strī-vedaka*, and the six *nokaṣāya* remain unliberated, the eighteen-natured transition state occurs.
**151-155**
**Question:** Why does the seventeen-natured transition state not occur?
**Answer:** Because the twenty-one-natured *kṣapaka* destroys eight *kṣapaya* with a single blow. Therefore, when eight *kṣapaya* are destroyed from the twenty-one-natured transition state, the thirteen-natured transition state occurs. This is why the seventeen-natured transition state does not occur.
**157-158**
**Commentary:** When the six karmas are liberated from the twenty-one-natured being, the twelve-natured transition state occurs. When the six karmas are liberated from the twenty-four-natured being, the fourteen-natured transition state occurs. Therefore, the seventeen-natured, sixteen-natured, and fifteen-natured transition states do not occur.
**159-161**
**Commentary:** The fourteen-natured transition state occurs when the six karmas are liberated from the twenty-four-natured being, and the *puruṣavedaka* remains unliberated. The thirteen-natured transition state occurs when the *puruṣavedaka* is liberated from the twenty-four-natured being, and the eight *kṣapaya* remain unliberated. Alternatively, the thirteen-natured transition state occurs for the *kṣapaka* when the eight *kṣapaya* are destroyed, until the *anānupaūrvī-saṃkrama* occurs.
**1** *Odaramāṇaga* (a type of being) also has the potential to break free from the cycle of existence, but this is possible only when the time is right, and it is not dependent on the *suṭṭha* (liberated) state.
