Verse 22] Exposition of the Sthitika-Khamitva (Steadfastness-Tolerance)
239. He (the Nāraka) was born in the seventh hell. 34. The highest stage of his Niseya (Auspicious Disposition) was attained. 35. The jāghanya (lowest) āvādhā (affliction) that was antomuhutt-uttarā (lasting for less than an antarmuhūrta) and evadisama-anudinna (uninterrupted for that period) is the dvitīya (second). Thereafter, he attained the upper half of the yogasthānas (spiritual abodes) of the Nārakas. 36. The utkṛṣṭa (highest) yoga (spiritual state) is described, which was anudinna (uninterrupted) in the dusamayāhiya-āvādhā-carimasa-maya (the last moment of the two-time more affliction) and the ekasama-yāhiya-āvādhā-carimasa-maya (the last moment of the one-time more affliction). 37. The utkṛṣṭa (highest) of that is the yathāniseya-hidi-pattaya (the highest stage of the Auspicious Disposition). 38. The utkṛṣṭa (highest) of the niseya-dvitīya-pattaya (the highest stage of the second Auspicious Disposition) is also attained immediately.
39. Whose is the utkṛṣṭa (highest) udayaṭṭhidi-pattaya (the highest stage of the Arising-Steadfastness)? 40. The one who, having performed the saṃjama-asaṃjama-guṇa-seḍhī (the series of Restraint and Non-restraint Qualities) and the saṃjama-guṇa-seṭhī (the series of Restraint Qualities), attained Mithyātva (Delusion). For him, the guna-seḍhī-sīsayāṇi (the peaks of the series of Qualities) that arose, the utkṛṣṭa (highest) udayaṭṭhidi-pattaya (the highest stage of the Arising-Steadfastness) of that Mithyātva (Delusion) is. 41. Similarly, for the Samyaktva (Right Faith) and Samyag-mithyātva (Mixed Right and Wrong Faith) as well. 42. However, the utkṛṣṭa (highest) udayaṭṭhidi-pattaya (the highest stage of the Arising-Steadfastness) is the kṣīṇa-hidi-bhanga (the destruction of the Steadfastness). 43. The anantara (immediately subsequent) antarmuhūrta-adhika jāghanya (lowest) āvādhā (affliction) was uninterrupted, i.e., it did not attain the udaya (arising). Thereafter, he attained the upper half of the yogasthānas (spiritual abodes) of the Nārakas, i.e., he went above the yavamajjha (middle) and remained there for an antarmuhūrta (less than 48 minutes). Then, upon becoming uninterrupted in the last moment of the two-time more affliction and the last moment of the one-time more affliction, he attained the utkṛṣṭa (highest) yoga (spiritual state).
