Hell-It is interesting to note that both Buddhist and -Jain ideas of suffering in hell are almost identical. Among the Jains we have the belief that in hell there is suffering from heat and cold. The sinners are out, pierced and hacked to pieces by swords and other weapone. They undergo very acute and horrible pain. If they commit evil deeds and injure others without repentance they go to hell and cross the river Bartaráni, the waves of which cut like sharp razars In Asurya hell they are roasted. The sinners are hewn with axes like pieces of timber in another hell There are other

ing to their sinful deeds done by them while on earth The noses, ears and lips of sinners are out by razors and the tongues are pulled out by sharp pikes, they are thrown into large couldrons and boild there, they are compelled to drink molten lead when they are thirsty. The evil doers are tortured more than a thousand years in the terrible Baitālika mountain in hell. The sinners are tortured day and night. They cry at the top of their voice in a dreadful hell which contains various implements of torture. Almost identical ideas of suffering in Buddhist hells can be gathered from the account of hells given in my work," Heaven and Hell in Buddhist Perspective" (p. 92 et seq)
