Publisher's Note
We feel pleasure in presenting before the readers this repository of the ancient Indian heritage.
The only source material of the technique of Vipassana meditation is the Buddha's teaching which forms the core of the Pāli literature—an invaluable legacy of Indian wisdom and culture. Pāli literature, comprising the Pāli Tipitaka and its commentaries, sub-commentaries, etc. contains a detailed analytical account of this technique. Unfortunately, this entire literature is presently not available in the Devanāgari script. It is for this reason that taking the version of the above-cited material approved by the Chattha-Sangāyana (held in Myanmar in 1954-56 A.D.) as the most authentic one, the V.R.I. has undertaken the important task of publishing the Tipitaka and its auxiliaries based on all the texts available in the Burmese script.
The main purpose of publication of this literature is to promote research on the beneficial aspects of the technique of Vipassana and forge a link between the study of this literature and the practical aspects of this technique. The passages making direct or indirect references to Vipassanā, Paññā, Nirodha, etc. have been highlighted in the Tipitaka volumes which will help subserve this purpose.
The Vipassana Research Institute wishes to express a deep gratitude to all the officials of the Indian Government who have given their kind support to this historical work. It also expresses heartfelt gratitude to the erudite scholars of Myanmar, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, as well as to the devoted sādhakas and sādhikās (meditators), who have so generously dedicated themselves to the Dhamma service.
The meditators have contributed their support in many ways. Many have offered their hand in transcribing the texts from the Burmese to the Devanāgari after learning the Burmese script. Some have taken up the important responsibility of examining and correcting these transcriptions. The Pāli scholars have performed the
