The "Tattvarth Sutra" or "Tattvarth Adhigam" by Acharya Umāsvāti is an immortal and unique work of Jain philosophy. It provides a concise presentation of all important subjects such as principles, knowledge, conduct, karma, geography, astronomy, and more. This treatise is the foremost Sanskrit creation in Jain philosophy. Its language is elaborate, and its style is fluid. Many commentaries and analyses have been written on this popular text, among which the one presented by Pandit Suhlalji Sanghvi holds a prominent place. In Hindi and other modern Indian languages, Panditji's work is undoubtedly the best among the Tattvarth commentaries. It encompasses the essence of all ancient Sanskrit commentaries. The detailed introduction by Panditji, from a historical and comparative perspective, is of great significance. This commentary has also been published in Gujarati and English. This is the third edition of the Hindi commentary. At the end of this edition, a thoughtful essay by Japanese scholar Kumara Sujuko Ohira is included, which sheds light on the core textual issues of the Tattvarth Sutra. Efforts have been made to make this edition useful from every perspective.
The publication of this treatise is dedicated to the memory of the late Lala Jagannath Jain of Amritsar. He was the revered father of Lala Har Jamray Jain, an esteemed minister of the Sohanlal Jain Dharma Pracharak Committee. In memory of him and his pious wife, the late Shrimati Jeevandevi, the 'Jeevan-Jagan Charitable Trust' has been established. This trust provides financial assistance to the Parsvanath Vidyashram Research Institute.
The institution expresses special gratitude to the Gyanodaya Trust, Ahmedabad, which accepted half of the publication costs by granting four thousand rupees. The institution has been indebted to esteemed Pandit Suhlalji and the highly respected Pandit Dalsukh Sai Malpania since the beginning. Our collaborator, Shri Jamanalal Jain, provided full support in the editing work and the modern presentation of the text, for which I am very grateful. Shri Hariprasad Nigam, the manager of Shivlal Printers, deserves thanks for the quality printing.
