The Nature of Gupti
207
Generally, there is only one form of Samvara, yet it is classified into various distinctions. In summary, there are 7 methods in a condensed form and 69 methods in an expanded form. This number depends on the religious codes of conduct.
Just as austerity is a method of Samvara, it is also a primary cause of Nirjara. Generally, austerity is considered a means to attain Abhyudaya (worldly happiness), yet it is also a means to attain Nishreyas (spiritual happiness) because, despite being one, due to the distinctions in the feelings behind it, it becomes two types: Sakama and Nishkama. Sakama austerity leads to Abhyudaya, while Nishkama austerity leads to Nishreyas. 2-3.
The nature of Gupti is Samyag Yogani Graho Gupti. 4.

1. Regulating physical conduct in taking or holding any object or in sitting, standing, or moving about with a discrimination between duty and non-duty constitutes Kaya Gupti.
2. Regulating speech in every situation or maintaining silence is Vachana Gupti.
3. Abandoning wrong resolutions and mixed resolutions of good and bad and adopting good resolutions is Mano Gupti.

Samyag Eriya, Samyag Bhasha, Samyag Eshana, Samyag Adana, Niksep, and Samyag Utsarga are the five Samitis. All Samitis form a method of Samvara due to their discerning nature. The five Samitis are as follows:
