Special Characteristics of Karmabhandha due to Variation in Result
Which tendencies primarily manifest in behavior, and which tendencies should a person aspiring for restraint focus on? 6.
Even when the causes of bondage are the same, the special characteristics of karmabhandha arise from variations in results, such as intensity, mildness, knownness, unknownness, potency, and the added factors. 7.
The specific characteristics of karmabhandha arise from the distinctions of intense propensity, mild propensity, known propensity, unknown propensity, potency, and additional factors.
This sutra expounds on how there are specific reasons for the variations in karmabhandha, even when the asrava (causes of bondage), such as transgressing life, sensory activities, and actions of right perception, are the same.
Even when the external causes of bondage are the same, karmabhandha differs due to the intensity and mildness of the results. For example, between two observers of the same visual, the one with mild attachment binds karma to a lesser extent compared to the one with intense attachment. Engaging in activities with intention is known as known propensity, while actions occurring without intention are known as unknown propensity. Even when external activities are the same in known and unknown propensities, there is a difference in karmabhandha. For instance, if a person mistakenly pierces a deer while aiming at a lifeless object, the karmabhandha of the person who kills by mistake is less intense compared to the one who kills with knowledge. Potency (specific strength) also influences the uniqueness of karmabhandha. For instance, whether it is performing good deeds like giving or serving, or bad deeds like violence or theft, a strong person can perform these actions with ease and enthusiasm, while a weak person struggles to do the same; therefore, the karmabhandha of a strong person is more intense compared to that of a weak person.
There are numerous distinctions in the category of the soul and living entities. The specific characteristics of these distinctions also contribute to the uniqueness of karmabhandha. For instance, between two individuals who commit bad acts such as murder or theft, if one possesses potent weapons and the other ordinary ones, the karmabhandha of the one with potent weapons is likely to be more intense due to the intense aura surrounding such powerful weapons.
Even when external factors are the same, the sutra indicates the distinctive characteristics of potency, additional factors, and so on that cause the inequality in karmabhandha. Then...
