[ ૧૭ ] આયુવાળા પ્રભુ મહાવીરની પહેલાં થયેલા જિન “પાર્થ” પણ ઐતિહાસિકજ વ્યક્તિ તરીકે ઈતિહાસસિદ્ધ છે. જેમના નિર્વાણ પછી અઢી વર્ષે મહાવીરનું નિર્વાણ થયેલું. આ ઉપરથી માલુમ થઈ શકે છે કે મહાવીરે-અઢી હજાર વર્ષ પર થયેલા તીર્થકર મહાવીરે કંઈ ન ધર્મ ઉપજાવ્યું નથી. કિન્તુ
» Dr. Guerinot (ડ. ગેરોટ) કહે છે –
“There can no longer be any doubt that Parshva was a historical personage. According to the Jaina Tradition he must have lived a hundred years and died 250 years before Mahavira, His period of activity, therefore, corresponds to the 8th century B. C.
The parents of Mahavira were followers of the religion of Parshva.... There have appeared 24 prophets of Jainism. They are ordinarily called Tirthankaras. With the 23rd Parshvanatha we enter into the region of history and reality." [ Introduction to his Essay on Jaina Bibliography. )
અર્થાત-એ નિઃ સન્ધહ વાત છે કે પાર્શ્વનાથ એક ઐતિહાસિક પુરુષ હતા. જૈનપરંપરાનુસાર એમનું આયુષ્ય એક સો વર્ષનું હતું અને એઓ મહાવીરની પહેલાં અઢીસો વર્ષે નિર્વાણ પામ્યા હતા. આમ એમનો (પાર્શ્વનાથન) જીવનકાળ ઈ. સન પૂર્વની આઠમી શતાબ્દી છે.
મહાવીરના માતાપિતા, પાર્શ્વનાથના ધર્મના અનુયાયી હતા જૈન ધર્મમાં જેઓ તીર્થકર કહેવાય છે એવા પરમાત્માઓ ૨૪ થયા છે. તેવીસમા તીર્થંકર પાર્શ્વનાથના સમયથી આપણે વાસ્તવિક અને ઐતિહાસિક પ્રદેશમાં પ્રવેશ થાય છે.
