Elaboration-In this context upakram conveys the sense of 'to begin a work'. This aphorism explains the process of upakram (commencing the act of) in two ways-as parikarma (nourishment) and as vastuvinash (destruction). To start nourishing human beings, animals and plants by providing butter and milk, animal-feed, and water and manure respectively is called parikarma dravya upakram. To start destroying them with the help of weapons, etc. is vastuvinash dravya upakram.
८०. से किं तं दुपए उवक्कमे ? __ दुपए उवक्कमे दुपयाणं नडाणं नट्टाणं जल्लाणं मल्लाणं मुट्ठियाणं वेलंबगाणं कहगाणं पवगाणं लासगाणं आइक्खगाणं लंखाणं मंखाणं तूणइलाणं तुंबवीणियाणं कायाणं मागहाणं। से ते दुपए उवक्कमे।

(उत्तर) नाट्यकार (नाटक करने वाले), नट (रस्से पर खेल करने वाले), नर्तकों (नृत्य करने वाले), मल्लों (पहलवानों), मौष्टिकों (मुट्ठी से प्रहार करने वालों, पंजा लड़ाने वालों), वेलबकों (विदूषकों, बहुरूपियों), कथकों (कथा-कहानी कहने वालों), प्लवकों (छलाँग लगाने वालों, तैरने वालों), लासकों (हास्योत्पादक क्रियाएँ करने वालों), भांडों (आख्यायकों, शुभाशुभ बताने वालों, भविष्यवक्ता), लंखों (बाँस आदि पर चढ़कर खेल दिखाने वालों), मंखों (चित्रपट दिखाने वाले भिक्षुओं), तूणिकों (तंतुवाद्य-वादकों), तुंबवीणकों (तुम्बे की वीणा-वादकों), कावडियाओं तथा मागधों (मंगल-पाठकों) आदि दो पैर वालों का (परिकर्म और विनाश करने के लिए) उपक्रम-द्विपद द्रव्य उपक्रम है।
