विवेचन-वस्त्र ग्रहण करने से पूर्व वस्त्र को पहले अन्दर-बाहर सभी कोनों से अच्छी तरह देखभाल करने के पीछे बड़ी दीर्घदृष्टि छिपी है। वृत्तिकार उन सभी बातों की ओर संकेत करते हैं-(१) वस्त्र के पल्ले में कोई कीमती चीज बँधी हो, साधु को उसे रखने से परिग्रह दोष लगेगा। (२) गृहस्थ की वह वस्तु गुम हो जाने से साधु पर शंका हो सकती है। (३) वस्त्र बीच में से फटा हो तो साधु को वस्त्र ग्रहण करने का कोई लाभ नहीं होगा। (४) गृहस्थ ने साधु के लिए वस्त्र को विविध द्रव्यों से सुवासित कर रखा हो या उसमें बीच में फूल-पत्ती आदि या चाँदी-सोने के बेलबूटे किये हों। (५) उस वस्त्र में दीमक, खटमल, , चींटी आदि कोई जीव लगा हो, बीज बँधे हों या हरी वनस्पति बँधी हो। (६) किसी ने द्वेषवश उस वस्त्र पर विष लगा दिया हो, जिसे पहनते ही प्राण वियोग की सम्भावना हो। (७) उस वस्त्र की अपेक्षित लम्बाई-चौड़ाई न हो। इत्यादि कारणों से साधु अपनी निश्राय में वस्त्र लेने से पूर्व गृहस्थ से कहता है-“तुमं चेव णं संतियं वत्थं अंतोअंतेण पडिलेहिस्सामि।"-अर्थात् मैं प्रतिलेखन करता हूँ तब तक यह वस्त्र तुम्हारा ही है। (वृत्ति पत्रांक ३९५)
Elaboration There is a far reaching purpose behind inspecting a cloth from all sides and every corner before taking it. The commentator (Vritti) explains all those points-(1) A valuable may have been tied with the end of the cloth. The ascetic will commit the fault of parigraha or having possessions. (2) When the householder loses that thing he may put blame on the ascetic. (3) If the cloth is torn in the middle it would be of no use to the ascetic. (4) The householder could have applied perfumes or embellished it with floral prints or gold-silver work specially for the ascetic. (5) The cloth could be infested with insects like termites, bedbug, louse, ant etc. or seeds and green vegetables could have been packed in it. (6) Someone could have applied poison due to animosity and there is chance of getting killed if worn. (7) The cloth may not be of desired dimension. For such reasons an ascetic tells to a householder before taking a cloth-This cloth scill belongs to you as long as I am inspecting it. (Vritti leaf 395)
