રાજવંશમાં જૈનધર્મ
૮૧ પાશ્વથી મહાવીરના સમય સુધી ઐતિહાસિક દૃષ્ટિએ કાંઈ ઉલ્લેખ મળતો નથી. ઐતિહાસિક દષ્ટિએ આધાર રાખી શકીએ તેવા કેઈપણ ઐતિહાસિક ગ્રંથ યા સમારકના અભાવે જૈન ઇતિહાસને આ ર૫૦ વર્ષનો સમય એ એક કેરૂં પાનું ગણાય. ગમે તેમ હોય તે પણ એટલું તે ચેક્કસ છે કે આ બે તીર્થંકરે વચ્ચેનું અંતર પૂરવું શક્ય નથી તેમ છતાં જૈનધર્મ એ જીવંત ધર્મ હતો તેમ કહેવામાં હરકત નથી. આપણે આગળ જોઈ ગયા તેમ પાશ્વના શિષ્યએ પિતાનું પ્રચારકાર્ય ચાલુ રાખ્યું હતું અને મહાવીર તેમજ તેના શિષ્યને ઈ. સ. પૂર્વે છઠ્ઠી શતાબ્દિમાં સુધારેલા જૈનધર્મ પ્રતિ તેમને આકર્ષવા માટે તેમના વર્ગના કેટલાક પ્રતિનિધિઓને તેમને મળવું પડયું હતું.
મહાવીરના સમયનાં કાંઈક વધારે ઐતિહાસિક પ્રમાણે મળવાની આશા રાખવા છતાં જૈન અને બૌદ્ધ શા અને અન્ય દંતકથાઓ સિવાય કાંઈ નથી કે જેના પર આપણે આધાર રાખી શકીએ. સુભાગ્યે જૈનશાસ્ત્રોએ આપણા માટે સત્ય હકીકતે અને બનાવે જાળવી રાખ્યાં છે, જો કે તે અપૂર્ણ હશે તેમ છતાંય જૈન ઇતિહાસના આ સમયનું જીવંત ચિત્ર આપણી આંખ સમક્ષ રજૂ કરવા તે પૂરતાં છે. પાશ્વની જેમજ મહાવીર પણ તે સમયના રાજવંશે સાથે એક લેહીને સંબંધ ધરાવતા હતા. તેના પિતા સિદ્ધાર્થ પિતે એક મોટા સરદાર હતા અને તે જ્ઞાતૃ ક્ષત્રિય જાતિના હતા. તેમનું નિવાસસ્થળ કુડપુર યા કુંડગામ (કુંડગ્રામ) હતું. જૈનશાસ્ત્રની હકીકત પ્રમાણે તે પિતાની જાતિને મુખી હતા અને એક નાના યા મોટા રાજ્યને ઘણી હતે. આપણે હવે પછી જોઈશું તેમ તે એક પ્રજાસત્તાક રાજ્યને અધિકારી હશે જેને મુખ્ય વિભાગ કુડપુર હશે, પરંતુ તે વખતના સમાજમાં જે સ્થાન તે ભેગવતા હશે તે એક સ્વતંત્ર
