ઉત્તર હિંદુસ્તાનમાં જૈનધર્મ
રાજ્યના મામુલી અધિકારી કરતાં વિશિષ્ટ એવું સ્વતંત્ર રાજકર્તા તરીકે પોતાનું જીવન ગાળતા હશે.
સાળ મહાજનપદના વિચાર કરતાં આપણુને જણાય છે કે જિનું રાજ્ય જૈન અને બૌદ્ધ બન્નેને સામાન્ય છે. ડૅા રાયાધરી કહે છે કે “ પ્રો॰ રાઈસ ડેવીડસ અને કનિંગહામના આધારે વિજજનું રાજ્ય આઠ સહાયકારી જાતિએ ( અ·કુલ ) નું બનેલું છે; જેમાં વિદેહા, લિવિએ, જ્ઞાતૃકા અને વિએ ખાસ અગત્યનાં છે. બીજી જાતિઓનું એળખાણ અનિશ્ચિત છે. આમ છતાં એ નોંધવા જેવું છે કે સૂત્રકૃતાંગના એક ફકરામાં ઉગ્ર, ભાગ, એક્ષ્વાકુ અને કૌરવ જાતિના જ્ઞાતૃ અને લિચ્છવિ જાતિ સાથે એકજ રાજ્યની પ્રજા અને એકજ સભાના રાજ્યા તરીકે ઉલ્લેખ કર્યાં છે.”૨

વિશેષ બૌદ્ધ પ્રમાણેાના આધારે ડા પ્રધાન આ સહાયકારી મંડળમાં એક વધારે જાતિ ગણાવે છે અને ઉમેરે છે કે “ તે નવ જાતિઓનું બનેલું છે. તેમાંની કેટલીક લિચ્છિવિ અથવા લિચ્છવ, વૃજિજ અથવા વજિજ, જ્ઞાતૃક અને વિદેહ છે. આ સહાયકારી મંડળે લિચ્છિવિ અથવા વૃજિના મંડળ તરીકે ઓળખાતાં, કારણ કે તે નવ જાતિમાં લિચ્છિવિ અને વૃજિ અગત્યનાં હતાં. આ નવ લિચ્છિવિ જાતિઓ પાછી નવ મકિ જાતિ અને કાસી-કેાસલના અઢાર ગણરાજાઓ સાથે જોડાઈ હતી.”ૐ વિદ્વાન પંડિતના આ નિવેદનને જૈનસૂત્રેા ટેકા આપે છે.૪
ડૉ યાકામી કહે છે કે “ રાજા ચેટક જેના ઉપર ચંપાના રાજા કૂણિક બળવાન લશ્કર સહિત ચઢી આન્યા હતા તેણે કાસી, કેસલ, લવિ અને મકિ આદિ અઢાર સહાયકારી રાજાઓને મેલાવી પૂછ્યું હતું કે પૂણિકની માંગણીઓ તે
