રાસાયણિક ક્રિયા નથી. અગ્નિકણના રૂપમાં થનારી ચિનગારી જેને મુર્મુ કહેવાય છે – બળતા હોય એટલે કંબશ્ચનની પ્રક્રિયા કરનારા સોલિડ કણ છે. એજ પ્રમાણે ઉનની શાલ, પોલિથિન (અથવા પ્લાસ્ટિકની થેલી) વગેરેમાં ઉત્પન્ન ચિનગારી પણ સ્ટેટિક ઇલેક્ટ્રિસિટીનું સ્પાર્કના રૂપમાં એટલે વિદ્યુત ચુંબકીય ઊર્જાના રૂપમાં વિકિરણ છે, જે અગ્નિકણ (મુર્મુર)થી ભિન્ન છે.
ઇલેક્ટ્રિક સ્પાર્ક પોતે તો અગ્નિ નથી, પણ અનુકૂળ સંયોગ મળે ત્યારે અગ્નિ પેદા કરી શકે છે. અનુકૂળ સંયોગમાં ત્રણેય અનિવાર્ય આવશ્યકતાની પૂર્તિ હોવી જરૂરી છે. જ્વલનશીલ પદાર્થ, જ્વલનબિંદુ સુધીનું તાપમાન તથા ઑક્સિજન ત્રણેયમાંથી કોઈપણ એકના અભાવમાં અગ્નિ અથવા કંબશ્ચનની પ્રક્રિયા થતી નથી. આ ત્રણ અનિવાર્યતાની પૂર્તિ ક્યાંક થાય છે, ક્યાંક થતી નથી એ વાત આપણે નીચેના ઉદાહરણોથી સ્પષ્ટ સમજી શકીએ છીએ.

E.D.M. મશીન ઃ ઇલેક્ટ્રિક ડિસ્ચાર્જ મશીનથી ધાતુના ઇલેક્ટ્રિક સ્પાર્કથી કાપીને આકાર અપાય છે જે ‘dye’ એટલે સાંચાના રૂપમાં કામ લેવાય છે. આ મશીનમાં એક ટાંકીને કેરોસીનથી ભરીને એની નીચેના તળિયા પર ધાતુ રખાય છે તથા ઇલેક્ટ્રિક સ્પાર્કિંગની ક્રિયાથી ધાતુને ઇચ્છા પ્રમાણે આકાર આપી શકાય છે. આ સંદર્ભમાં ઇન્ટરનેટથી મળતી જાણકારી આ પ્રમાણે છે
EDM: Principles of Operation
ELECRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING (EDM) is accomplished with a system comprising two major components: a machine tool and a power supply. The machine tool holds a shaped electrode which advances into the workpiece and produces a shaped cavity. The power supply produces a high frequency series of electrical spark discharges between the electrode and the workpiece, which removes metal from the workpiece by thermal erosion or vaporization.
The basic components of an EDM system are illustrated to the right. The workpiece is mounted on the table of the machine tool and the electrode is attached to the ram of the machine. A DC servo unit or hydraulic cylinder moves the ram (and electrode) in a vertical motion and maintains proper position of the electrode in relation to the workpiece. The positioning is controlled automatically and with extreme accuracy by the servo system and power supply.
