________________ INTRODUCTION 1. The present text is based on the manuscript discovered by Mahapandita Rahula Sankstyayana in the Tibetan monastery of Ngor in 1934. The photographs of this manuscript brought by him are kept in the Library of the Bihar Research Society, Patna. In the Journal of the Bihar and Orissa Research Society, vol. XXI, pt. i, p. 35, the manuscript is described by Rahulaji as below. No. 86. Title Abhidharmasamuccayabhasya. Author T. (Yasomitra). Script Magadhi. Size 11 1/3--2 1/6. (in inches). Leaves 149. : Lines 6. 2. In the above description, Yasomitra has been suggested as the author. But Tlbetan word 'Rgyal-bahi sras', on which the suggestion is based, could be translated as Jinaputra'.? About the author we shall discuss later on. The characterization of script as Magadhi also does not appear proper. It may better be called Proto-Maithili. The total number of folios in the manuscript is 149+1 extra added in the middle of 59A, 3. We have prepared the critical edition with the help of the following Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese texts. : (1) V.V.
