________________ FOREWORD It was long way back in the year 1960 that an important project to prepare the edition of Nyayakandali by Sri Sridharacarya which is a commentary on Padarthadharmasangraha also called Prasastapadabhasya by Prasastapadacarya, a pioneering work on Kanada's Valsesikasutras, with two sub-commentaries on it, namely, Tippana of Naracandrasuri and Panjika of Rajasekharasuri, to be Published in the Gaekwad's Oriental Series was mooted. Late Dr. Jitendra S. Jetly who was an eminent scholar of Nyayavaisesika system of philosophy (an important work of this system Kiranavali Edited by him was published as G.O.S. No. 154 in 1971 ) agreed to undertake this work in response to the proposal made by Dr. Bhogilal J. Sandesara, the then Director, Oriental Institute. Late Dr. U. P. Shah, the then Deputy Director, Oriental Institute, discovered one more that is third, commentary on Nyayakandali namely Kusumodgama of Sicila Vommideva from Surat around 1971 and was considered suitable to be included in the project. While working on this project, in fact, when he had reconstituted the text of Nyayakandali on the basis of several manuscripts and had almost completed the text of the two commentaries, Dr. Jetly suddenly and untimely expired on 26-9-1972. The work suffered a break for some time. It was later entrusted to Dr. Vasant G. Parikh, a worthy student of Dr. Jetly on 23-5-75 who accepted the assignment gladly. In 1975, it was decided that Dr. Vasant Parikh will be the joint Editor of the whole project. During the same year Dr. A. L. Thakur, a leading scholar of Nyayavaisesika philosophy, was requested to check the press copy and suggest alteration, if any. He checked the press copy with great care. . It was only in 1983 that the duly checked press copy was sent to the M. S. University Press to start printing. But due to heavy burden of other University assignments the University Press could not show reasonable progress in the work of printing even after about two years. Therefore, its printing was assigned in 1985 to the Gaekwad Printrance, a leading press in Baroda, competent enough to execute such complex work of printing. In this press too the work progressed very slowly due to certain technical and administrative difficulties, Originally it was envisagod that the work would be published in two volumes, the second one containing the two commentaries written by Jain commentators. When, therefore, the printing sufficient for publication of the first volume was over, Dr. A. L. Thakur was requested to write Introduction as agreed upon by him but due to indifferent health he could not write it. Dr. Vasant
