________________ ABOUT THE BOOK The Avashyaka Sutra occupies a very prominent place among the Jain canonical texts. This work is divided into six sections dealing six essential activities that must be undertaken by all the ascetics everyday without fail. These activities are- 1. Samayika, 2. Caturvimsati-stava, 3. Vandana, 4. Pratikramana, 5. Kayotsarga and 6. Pratyakhyana. The oldest commentary in Prakrit verses (gathas) on this Avashyaka Sutra is Niryukti which is regarded as having been composed by Acharya Bhadrabahu. There are two Acharyas having name of Bhadrabahu, one is Bhadrabahu-I, designated as Shrutakevali & Chaturdash Purvadhara (probably in 3-4 century B.C.), the other is Bhadrabahu-II (5-6 century A.D.) The orthodox tradition believes that (Shrutakevali) Acharya Bhadrabahu-I is the author of this Niryukti. But most of the Jain scholars are of the opinion that the author of Niryukti must not be (Shrutakevali) Bhadrabahu-I. According to some scholars, the Niryukti gathas were composed even before Bhadrabahu-II; many of them have been included in present Niryukti. Thus, the original Niryukti has undergone with several additions. It is also observed that some of the gathas of Niryukti & Bhasya are intermixed. There is reason to believe that the completion of this present Niryukti must have taken place upto the time of Acharya Bhadrabahu-II, and a good number of the gathas have been included by him in this Niryukti which had came to him through tradition. Avashyaka Niryukti is a vast treatise. Its available edition consists of more than thousand gathas. It becomes more voluminous when it is presented with its Sanskrit commentary. The oldest Sanskrit commentary on Avashyaka Niryukti has been composed by distinguished & eminent Jain Acharya Haribhadra Suri of 8th century A.D. In this present volume, only 79 gathas of said Niryukti with the skt. Commentary of Acharya Haribhadra are included. This portion is regarded as an introductory part (Purva-Pithika) of the Niryukti, wherein the detailed discussion regarding the five categories of five knowledge has been made. The admirable feature of this edition is that Niryukti gathas & its sanskrit commentary, both have been translated in hindi and detailed explanation, wherever necessary, has also been made thereon. Hence, this volume will fulfill the much-felt need and will be cordially welcomed. The remaining parts of this work will be published in due course of time.
