In Dharmakirti's opinion unknown object is the subject of pramāṇa'ajñātārthaprakāśo vā" This also proves that he was the follower of the doctrine of the external objects existence.
Even if we trace back to Dharmakirti's statement on the twofoldness of cognition, it is related to the two-foldness of the respective objects, 'mānam dvividham viṣayadvaividhyāt" i.e. svalakṣaṇa sāmānyalakṣaṇa. In Nyaya-Bindu, the description about svalakṣaṇa and sāmānyalakṣaṇa is given in the form of 'Bahyartha'."

Sva-lakṣaṇa is stated as pramartha-sat due to artha-kriyaśaktatva.
"arthakriyāsamartham yat tadatra pramarthasat anyat samvṛtisat proktam te sāmānasvalakṣṇe. "14 Prameya is devided into two śakta and aśakta. Śakta is reffered to paramartha sat and aśakta is as samvṛtisat. Pramāņa-Vārtika describes two types of ojbects according to arthakriyāśakti and its absence:
"mānam dvividham viṣayadvaividhyāt. arthakriyāyām saktyasaktitaḥ."15
Here it is important that Dharmkirti does not emphasize the twofoldness of objects on the basis of two-foldness of valid cognition rather, on the contrary to this, he has stated two foldness of valid cognition due to the twofoldness of objects. It clearly indicates the belief of Dharmakirti in external objects existence. Svakṣaṇa as an object is comprehended through perceptual cognition while sāmānya-lakṣaṇa as an object through inference. Here it will be important to note that Naiyayikas hold the view of pramāṇa-samplava i.e. no valid cognition is isolated from each other. Though each type of valid cognition is generally to enable us to comprehend some particular feature/object yet Naiyayikas beleive that the same kind of comprehension be made through alternative type of valid cognition also "Pramātuḥ pramātavya arthe pramāṇānām sambhavo abhisamplavaḥ, asambhavo vyavasthiti" (Vātsyāyana,
