2. THE AUTHORS: ANANTAVIRYA

to say, he was not so much influenced by vrddha Anantavirya. This is not all. In order to show his own distinctness he used such adjectives Ravibhadrapadopajivi' and 'Ravibhadrapāda-kamalacañcarīkd in the introductory verses of the chapters.
Though admitedly Anantavīrya's SVT has a lucid style, it has not the fluency due to the very compact and complicated style of Akalarka. (a) Anantavīrya as Dogmatic Logician :
It is interesting to note that Anantavirya, though a first rate logician, is dogmatic sometimes. This is proved by his discussion on the authorship of the following vārtika:
anyathānupapannatva yatra tatra trayena kim,
nânyathānupapannatvam yatra tatra trayena kim. The author of this vārtika is Pātrakesariswāmi, this fact is attested by sāntarakṣita, the author of Tattvasamgrahal and its (TS) commentator Kamalaśīla; also by Vadideva, the author of Syādvādaratnākara”. This verse occurs in TS (p. 405) and it is clearly stated therein that it belongs to Pātrakesariswāmi. It also occurs in Pramāņavārtikasvavrtti-tīkā (p. 9), but without the name of Pātrakesariswāmi. Sravan Belgo! inscription of Mallisena Prasasti3 suggests that Pātrakesari had written a work-Trilaksanakadarthana (TLK). Besides, Anantavirya's reference—tena tadvișayatrilaksaņakadarthanaṁ uttarabhāsyam yataḥ krtaṁ (SVT. p. 371), proves that the verse cited above is taken from TLK of Pātrakesari and this is also supported by tradition. Pätrakesari and Patraswami are identical persons. This contention is supported by Anantavirya's reference (SVT): svāminah pătrakesarinah'. Further, Vādirāja, in his Nyāyavini scaya-vivarana, refers to pätrakesari swāmine'. From our discussion it can be stated that the verse cited above is definitely from TLK of Pātrakesariswāmis ; it must be noted that he was referred to by all the three names, viz., Pātraswāmi, Pātrakesari, Pātrakesariswāmi.
In spite of these evidences, Anantavīrya ascribes the authorship of this work TLK, to Sīmandharaswāmie; he criticises the views of those who attribute the authorship to Pātrakesari in the following manner :
1 TS. p. 60 2 S.R. p. 521. * JSLS, Vol. I, No. 54. 4 NVV, Vol. II, p. 177. 5 Trilaksnaleadarthane vă Sastre vistarena Patraleesari-swäminā pratipadanāt,-vide
NVV. Vol. II. p. 234. & According to Jaina tradition Simandharaswāmi is a living Tirthankara residing
is Mahāvideha near Mt. Sumeru.
