FROM THE PUBLISHER
Devidas-Vilas is a majestic work of the late 18th century. Its composer Shri Devidas was a gifted poet of Bundeli-Hindi. Besides he was a highly sensitive, spiritually inclined individual and matured philosopher. He had complete command on expression, classical forms of stanza and the varied literary styles. Also, he was a master of the different kinds of musical modes and melodies. The scholarly introduction to the work contains a detailed exposition and commentary on these and other aspects of Devidas-Vilas. It is indeed amazing to note that such a popular and scholarly poet of his times, who gave Bundeli-Hindi a strong literary base, has remained rather unknown and neglected for so long.
One of the important aims of Shri Ganesh Varni (Research) Institute has been to bring to light the rare and unpublished ancient Jain manuscripts. Accordingly, the Institute had published, a few years ago, the historical work of the great poet of Apabhramsh Maha-kavi Raidhu entitled 'Acharya Bhadrabahu-Chanakya-Chadragupta Kathanak evam Raja Kalki Varnan" (Edited by Prof. (Dr.) Rajaram Jain) the publication has been highly acclaimed by scholars. The present work- Devidas-Vilas belongs to this category of publication.
We are greatly indebted to Dr. (Mrs.) Vidyawati Jain, who has restored the present work its rightful glory, and has carried out the delicate task of editing and making a critical and comparative study. She has rendered a great service to the literary world by unfolding the many facets of the personality and creativity of the poet Devidas.
We are hopeful that the Hindi literary world will gain new impetus and direction from this publication.
