[170 उ. गौतम ! एक लाख अट्ठाईस हजार योजन मोटी वालुकाप्रभापृथ्वी के ऊपर के एक हजार योजन अवगाहन (पार) करके अर्थात नीचे. और नीचे से एक हजार योजन छोड़ कर बीच में एक लाख छव्वीस हजार योजन प्रदेश में, वालुकाप्रभापृथ्वी के नैरयिकों के पन्द्रह लाख नारकावास हैं, ऐसा कहा है। वे नरक अन्दर से गोल, बाहर से चौरस और नीचे से छुरे के आकार से युक्त, नित्य गाढ़ अन्धकार से व्याप्त, ग्रह, चन्द्रमा, सूर्य, नक्षत्र आदि ज्योतिष्कों को प्रभा से रहित हैं / उनके तलभाग मेद, चर्बी, मवाद-पटल, रुधिर और मांस के कीचड़ के लेप से लिप्त होते हैं; अतएव वे अशुचि (अपवित्र), बीभत्स, अतीव दुर्गन्धित, कापोत रंग की धधकती अग्नि के वर्णसदृश, दुःसह एवं अशुभ नरक हैं / उन नरकों में वेदनाएँ अशुभ हैं। इन (ऐसे नारकावासों) में वालुकाप्रभापृथ्वी के पर्याप्त एवं अपर्याप्त नारकों के स्थान कहे हैं / उपपात की अपेक्षा से (वे नारकावास) लोक के असंख्यातवें भाग में (हैं); समुद्घात की अपेक्षा से लोक के असंख्यातवें भाग में (हैं); (और) स्वस्थान की अपेक्षा से (भी) लोक के असंख्यातवें भाग में (हैं)। जिनमें वहुत-से वालुकाप्रभापृथ्वी के नारक निवास करते हैं। हे आयुष्मन् श्रमणो! वे काले, काली आभा वाले गम्भीर-लोमहर्षक, भीम, उत्कृष्ट त्रासजनक, वर्ण से अत्यन्त कृष्ण कहे हैं। वे नारक (वहाँ) नित्य भयभीत, सदैव त्रस्त, सदा (परमाधार्मिक असुरों द्वारा) त्रास पहुँचाये हुए, नित्य उद्विग्न और सदैव परम अशुभ तत्सम्बद्ध नरकभय का प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव करते हुए जीवनयापन करते हैं।
