तृतीय प्रतिपत्ति द्वितीय उद्देशक प्रथम उद्देशक में नरक-पृथ्वियों के नाम, गोत्र, बाहल्य आदि विविध जानकारियां दी गई हैं। अब क्रमप्राप्त द्वितीय उद्देशक में नरक पृथ्वियों के किस प्रदेश में कितने नरकावास हैं और वे कैसे हैं, इत्यादि वर्णन किया जा रहा है। उसका आदि सूत्र यह है 81. कइ णं भंते ! पुढवीओ पण्णत्ताओ? गोयमा ! सत्त पुढवीओ पण्णताओ, तंजहा-रयणप्पभा जाव अहेसत्तमा / इमोसे णं रयणप्पभाए पुढवीए असीउत्तर जोयणसयसहस्सबाहल्लाए उरि केवइयं ओगाहित्ता हेट्ठा केवइयं वज्जित्ता मज्शे केवइए केवइया निरयावाससयसहस्सा पण्णता? गोयमा ! इमोसे गं रयणप्पभाए पुढवीए असोउत्तर जोयणसयसहस्सबाहल्लाए उरि एगं जोयणसहस्सं ओगाहित्ता हेट्ठावि एग जोयणसहस्सं वज्जेता मज्झे अडसत्तरी जोयणसयसहस्सा, एल्थ णं रयणप्पभाए पुढवीए नेरझ्याणं तीसं निरयावाससयसहस्साई भवंति ति मक्खाया। ते णं गरग अंतोयट्टा बाहिं चउरंसा जाव असुभा णरएसु क्यणा / एवं एएणं अभिलावेणं उवजुजिउण भाणियन्वं ठाणप्पयाणुसारेण, जत्थ जं बाहल्लं जत्थ जत्तिथा वानिरयावाससयसहस्सा जाव अहे सत्तमाए पुढवीए- अहे सत्तमाए मज्झिमं केवइए कति अणुत्तरा महामहालया महाणिरया पण्णत्ता, एवं पुच्छियव्वं वागरेयव्वं पि तहेव / [81] हे भगवन् ! पृथ्वियां कितनी कही गई हैं ? गौतम ! सात पृथ्वियां कही गई हैं जैसे कि रत्नप्रभा यावत् अधःसप्तम पृथ्वी / भगवन् ! एक लाख अस्सी हजार योजन प्रमाण बाहल्य वाली इस रत्नप्रभा पृथ्वी के ऊपर से कितनी दूर जाने पर और नीचे के कितने भाग को छोड़कर मध्य के कितने भाग में कितने लाख नरकावास कहे गये हैं ? गौतम ! इस एक लाख अस्सीहजार योजनप्रमाण बाहल्यवाली रत्नप्रभापृथ्वी के एक हजार योजन का ऊपरी भाग छोड़ कर और नीचे का एक हजार योजन का भाग छोड़कर मध्य में एक लाख अठहत्तर हजार योजनप्रमाणक्षेत्र में तीस लाख नरकावास हैं, ऐसा कहा गया है / ये नरकावास अन्दर से मध्य भाग में गोल हैं बाहर से चौकोन है यावत् इन नरकावासों में अशुभ वेदना है। इसो अभिलाप के अनुसार प्रज्ञापना के स्थानपद के मुताबिक सब वक्तव्यता कहनी चाहिए / जहाँ जितना बाहल्य है और जहाँ जितने नरकावास हैं, उन्हें विशेषण के रूप में जोड़कर सप्तम पृथ्वी पर्यन्त कहना चाहिए, यथा--अधःसप्तमपृथ्वी के मध्यवर्ती कितने क्षेत्र में कितने अनुत्तर, बड़े से बड़े महानरक कहे गये हैं, ऐसा प्रश्न करके उसका उत्तर भी पूर्ववत् कहना चाहिए /
