प्रथम अध्ययन : सामायिक प्रतिज्ञासूत्र
करेमि भंते ! सामाइयं सव्वं सावजं जोगं पच्चक्खामि जावज्जीवाए, तिविहं तिविहेणं - मणेणं, वायाए, काएणं न करेमि, न कारवेमि, करंतंपि अन्नं न समणुजाणामि। तस्स भंते! पडिक्कमामि, निंदामि गरिहामि अप्पाणं वोसिरामि।
भावार्थ - भगवन् ! मैं सामायिक व्रत ग्रहण करता हूँ । अतः सावद्य-पाप कर्म वाले व्यापारों का त्याग करता हूँ।
जीवन पर्यन्त मन, वचन और शरीर - इन तीनों योगों से पाप कर्म न मैं स्वयं करूंगा, न दूसरों से कराऊंगा और न करने वालों का अनुमोदन ही करूंगा।
भंते ! पूर्वकृत पापों से निवृत्त होता हूँ, अपने मन से पापों को बुरा मानता हूँ, आपकी साक्षी से उनकी गर्हा - निन्दा करता हूँ, अतीत में कृत पापों का पूर्णरूप से परित्याग करता हूँ।
विवेचन - जब मोक्षाभिलाषी साधक, गृहस्थ जीवन से सर्वविरति-साधुता की ओर अग्रसर होता है, तब यह सामायिकसूत्र बोला जाता है । विश्व-हितंकर संत के पद पर पहुंचने के लिये इस सामायिकसूत्र का आलम्बन लेना जैनपरम्परा के अनुसार अनिवार्य है।
सामायिक का उद्देश्य समभाव की साधना है। प्राणिमात्र पर समभाव रखना महान् उच्च आदर्श है। शास्त्रकार कहते हैं -
जो समो सव्वभूएस, तसेसु थावरेसु य। तस्स सामाइयं होइ, इइ केवलिभासियं॥
- अनुयोगद्वार केवली भगवान् ने कहा है - जो (साधक) समस्त त्रस और स्थावर जीवों के प्रति समभाव धारण करता है, उसी को सामायिक की प्राप्ति होती है।
जैनधर्म समताप्रधान धर्म है, समता की साधना को ही सामायिक कहते हैं । सामायिक शब्द की व्युत्पत्ति इस प्रकार है – 'समस्य आयः समायः, सः प्रयोजनं यस्य तत् सामायिकम्' अर्थात् वह अनुष्ठान जिसका प्रयोजन जीवन में समता लाना है । गृहस्थ श्रावक सामायिक स्वीकार करते समय दो करण और तीन योग से साधारणतया एक मुहूर्त अर्थात् ४८ मिनिट के लिये सावद्ययोग का त्याग करता है । जैनधर्म में जो भी प्रत्याख्यान एवं नियम किया जाता है उसमें करण और योग का होना आवश्यक है। करण का अर्थ है -
