'मत्थएण वन्दामि' का अर्थ है - मस्तक झुकाकर वन्दना करता हूँ। यह वाचिक वन्दना का रूप है, अतएव मानसिक, वाचिक और कायिक त्रिविध वन्दना का स्वरूप-निर्देश होने से पुनरुक्ति दोष नहीं है ।
जैनधर्म के अनुसार अहंकार नीचगोत्र-कर्म के बन्ध का कारण है तथा नम्रता से उच्चगोत्र का बन्ध होता है । अतः जो साधक नम्र हैं, वृद्धों का आदर करते हैं, सद्गुणी के प्रति पूज्य भाव रखते हैं, वे ही उच्च हैं, सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं। जैनधर्म गुणों का पुजारी है। जैनधर्म में विनय एवं नम्रता को तप कहा गया है। कहा है 'विणओ जिणसासणमूलं, ' 'विणयमूलो धम्मो ।'

दशवैकालिक सूत्र में भी विनय का गुणगान किया है। विनयाध्ययन में वृक्ष का रूपक देते हुए कहा है. खंधाओ पच्छा समुवेंति साहा । तओ से पुष्पंच फलं रसो य ॥ मूलं परमो से मोक्खो । कित्ती सुयं सिग्धं, निस्सेसं चाभिगच्छइ ॥
मूलाओ खंधप्पभवो दुमस्स, साह-प्पसाहा विरुहंति पत्ता, एवं धम्मस्स विणओ, जेण

अर्थात् – जिस प्रकार वृक्ष के मूल से स्कन्ध, स्कन्ध से शाखाएँ, शाखाओं से प्रशाखाएँ और फि र क्रम से पत्र, पुष्प, फल एवं रस उत्पन्न होते हैं, इसी प्रकार धर्मवृक्ष का मूल विनय है और उसका अन्तिम फल एवं रस मोक्ष है ।
विणओ सासणे मूलं, विणीओ संजओ भवे । विणयाउ विप्पमुक्कस्स, कओ धम्मो कओ तवो ॥
