प्रस्तुत आगम का नाम निशीष है। प्रावाराङ्गनियुक्ति में 'आवारपरूष्प' और 'निसीह' ये दो नाम प्राप्त होते है। अन्य कई स्थलों पर वे दो नाम आये हैं। नन्दीसूत्र घोर पक्खियमुत ग्रन्थ में 'निसीह' शब्द का प्रयोग प्रस्तुत आगम के लिए हुआ है। धवला और जयधवला में क्रमश: 'णिसिहिय' और 'णिसीहीय' का प्रयोग हुआ है । अंग प्रज्ञप्तिचूलिका में 'णिसेहिय' शब्द प्राया है । "
निसीह शब्द का संस्कृत रूप निशीष है। णिसीहिय और णिसीहीय का संस्कृत अर्थ निधिक है। वेवर ६ ने निसीह शब्द पर चिन्तन करते हुए लिखा है कि निसीह शब्द का अर्थ निषेध होना चाहिए। उन्होंने अपने मन्तब्य को सिद्ध करने हेतु उत्तराध्ययन में व्यवहृते समाचारी प्रकरण में 'निसीहिया' 'नैषेधिकी' शब्द समुपस्थित किया है। और उन शब्दों की परिभाषा देकर यह सिद्ध करने का प्रयास किया है कि निसीह शब्द का अर्थ 'निशीव' नहीं 'निषेध' है । दिगम्बर ग्रन्थों में निसीह के स्थान में निसीहिया शब्द का व्यवहार किया गया । गोम्मटसार में भी यही शब्द प्राप्त होता है 15 गोम्मटसार की टीका में निसीहिया का संस्कृत रूप निषीधिका किया है। आचार्य जिनसेन ने हरिवंशपुराण में निशीथ के लिए 'निषद्यक' शब्द का व्यवहार किया है । तत्त्वार्थभाष्य में निसीह शब्द का संस्कृत रूप निशीष माना है। नियुक्तिकार को भी यही अर्थ अभिप्रेत है। इस प्रकार श्वेताम्बर साहित्य के अभिमतानुसार निसीह का संस्कृत रूप निशीथ और उसका अर्थ अप्रकाश्य है । दिगम्बर साहित्य की दृष्टि से निसीहिया का संस्कृत रूप निशीधिका है और उसका अर्थ प्रायश्चित्त शास्त्र या प्रमाददोष का निषेध करने वाला शास्त्र है ।
शास्त्रदृष्टि से निसीह शब्द पर चिन्तन किया जाय तो निसीह शब्द के संस्कृत रूप दोनों हो सकते हैं, क्योंकि 'थ' और 'घ' दोनों को प्राकृत भाषा में हकार आदेश होता है। सीहिया शब्द के संस्कृत निषिधिका और निशीथिका अर्थ की दृष्टि से चिन्तन करें तो निषिध या निषिधिका की अपेक्षा निशीय या निशीथिका अर्थ अधिक संगत प्रतीत होता है
