[159th Uddeshaka]
The explanation of the term 'bija' (seed) and 'harita-mala' (green garland) is not given, and the explanation of the term 'varatika' (cowrie) is more. This term is not available in any text.
In these three sutras, three actions are mentioned:
In the first sutra, the verb 'kareti' (to make) is stated.
In the second sutra, the verb 'dhareti' (to hold) is stated.
In the third sutra, the verb 'pindadheti' (to wear) is stated.
Here, 'kareti' means to make, i.e., to create. 'Dhareti' means to hold, i.e., to keep with oneself. 'Pindadheti' means to wear, i.e., to wear it oneself. Thus, the three verbs have different meanings.
Similarly, in the subsequent sutras, the use of these three verbs is found, and the same meanings apply everywhere.
Expiation for the formation of the root, etc.
4. A bhikkhu who, with the intention of sexual intercourse with a woman, makes -
1. an iron ornament, 2. a copper ornament, 3. a tin ornament, 4. a glass ornament, 5. a silver ornament, 6. a gold ornament, or approves of the one who makes it.
5. A bhikkhu who, with the intention of sexual intercourse with a woman, holds -
an iron ornament up to a gold ornament, or approves of the one who holds it.
6. A bhikkhu who, with the intention of sexual intercourse with a woman, wears -
an iron ornament up to a gold ornament, or approves of the one who wears it.
(He incurs the Guru-chaumasi prayashchitta.)
Explanation - The restraint of the one who is burning with passion is the abandonment of the six-fold activity. There, the faults of bondage, etc. arise. "Therefore, he does not make, nor hold, nor wear [them]."
