निशीथ का ज्ञाता हए बिना कोई भी श्रमण अपने सम्बन्धियों के यहां भिक्षा के लिए नहीं जा सकता और न वह उपाध्याय आदि पद के योग्य ही माना जा सकता है। श्रमण-मण्डली का अगुआ होने में और स्वतन्त्र विहार करने में भी निशीथ का ज्ञान आवश्यक है। क्योंकि निशीथ का ज्ञाता हुए बिना कोई साधु प्रायश्चित्त देने का अधिकारी नहीं हो सकता । इसीलिए व्यवहारसूत्र में निशीथ को एक मानदण्ड के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया गया है ।
छेदसूत्र दो प्रकार के हैं। कुछ छेदसूत्र अंग के अन्तर्गत आते हैं तो और कुछ छेदसूत्र अंगबाह्य के अन्तर्गत आते हैं। निशीथसूत्र अंग के अन्तर्गत है और अन्य छेदसूत्र अंगबाह्य के अन्तर्गत हैं। आचार्य देववाचक ने यद्यपि आचारांग और निशीथ के पारस्परिक सम्बन्ध का उल्लेख नहीं किया है। वहां पर तो केवल आचारांग के पच्चीस अध्ययनों का ही उल्लेख है।४ समवायांगसूत्र में प्राचारांग के नौ अध्ययन और आचारचूला के सोलह अध्ययन इस प्रकार आचारांग के पच्चीस अध्ययनों का वर्णन किया है।५ नन्दीसूत्र में निशीथ का एक स्वतन्त्र कालिकसूत्र के रूप में वर्णन किया गया है। किन्तु प्राचारांग के पच्चीस अध्ययनों में उसकी गणना नहीं गई की है।६ सम्भव है आचार्य देववाचक के सामने निशीथ प्राचारांग की ही एक चूला है, इस प्रकार की धारणा न रही हो । समवायांगसूत्र में चूलिका के साथ आचारांगसूत्र के ८५ उद्देशनकाल बतलाये हैं। नवाङ्गी टीकाकार आचार्य अभयदेव ने चतुर्थ आचारचूला तक की प्रस्तुत संख्यापूर्ति का संकेत किया है। वह इस प्रकार है
