हम पूर्व पंक्तियों में लिख चुके हैं छेद-सूत्रों को प्रायश्चित्तसूत्र कहा गया है। स्थानांग में श्रमणों के लिए पांच चारित्रों का उल्लेख है - १. सामायिक, २. छेदोपस्थापनीय, ३. परिहारविशुद्धि, ४. सूक्ष्मसंपराय, ५. यथाख्यात' । इनमें से वर्तमान में अन्तिम तीन चारित्र विच्छिन्न हो गये हैं । सामायिक चारित्र स्वल्पकालीन होता है, छेदोपस्थापनिक चारित्र ही जीवनपर्यन्त रहता है । प्रायश्चित्त का सम्बन्ध भी इसी चारित्र से है । सम्भवतः इसी चारित्र को लक्ष्य में रखकर प्रायश्चित्तसूत्रों को छेदसूत्र की संज्ञा दी गई हो ।

दशाश्रुतस्कन्ध, व्यवहार और बृहत्कल्प ये सूत्र नौवें प्रत्याख्यान पूर्व छिन्न अर्थात् पृथक् करने से उन्हें छेदसूत्र की संज्ञा दी गई हो, यह भी सम्भव है । 3
निशीथसूत्र के उन्नीसवें उद्देशक के सत्रहवें सूत्र में छेदसूत्र को 'उत्तमश्रुत' कहा गया है । संघदासगणि निशीथभाष्य में छेदसूत्र को उत्तमश्रुत माना है । जिनदासगणि महत्तर ने निशीथचूर्णि में यह प्रश्न उपस्थित किया है और पुनः उन्होंने ही प्रश्न का समाधान करते हुए लिखा है कि छेदसूत्र में प्रायश्चित्तविधि का निरूपण होने से वह चारित्र की विशुद्धि करता है, तदर्थं ही छेदसूत्रों को उत्तमश्रुत कहा गया है । "
उत्तमश्रुत शब्द पर चिन्तन करते हुए एक जिज्ञासा अन्तर्मानस में उद्बुद्ध होती है कि छेदसूत्र कहीं 'छेक' सूत्र तो नहीं है ? छेकश्रुत का अर्थ है कल्याणश्रुत और उत्तमश्रुत । दशाश्रुतस्कन्ध की चूर्णि में दशाश्रुतस्कन्ध को 'छेक' सूत्र का प्रमुख ग्रन्थ माना है । दशाश्रुतस्कन्ध प्रायश्चित्तसूत्र नहीं है । वह तो श्राचारसूत्र है । इसीलिए दशाश्रुतस्कन्धचूर्ण में दशाश्रुतस्कन्ध को चरणकरणानुयोग में लिया गया है । यदि छेदसूत्र को छेकसूत्र मान भी लिया जाय तो किसी प्रकार की आपत्ति नहीं हो सकती । आचार्य शय्यंभव के दशवैकालिकसूत्र में— जं छेयं तं समायरे ७ पद प्राप्त है । यहाँ पर छेय शब्द से छेक होने की पुष्टि होती है।5
