[निशीथसूत्र
उत्तर-नहीं, किसी अनाचार का अनेक बार सेवन करने पर, ज्यादा लम्बे समय तक दोष सेवन करने पर, लोकापवाद होने पर अथवा तपस्या करने की शक्ति न होने पर छेद प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता है । यह परिहार तप से भिन्न प्रकार का प्रायश्चित्त है ।
छेद प्रायश्चित्त जघन्य एक दिन का, उत्कृष्ट छह मास का दिया जा सकता है। इससे ज्यादा प्रायश्चित्त आवश्यक होने पर पाठवाँ "मूल" (नई दीक्षा का) प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता है। किन्तु केवल तप, परिहार तप या दीक्षाछेद का प्रायश्चित्त छह मास से अधिक देने का विधान नहीं है ।
प्रश्न-क्या वर्तमान में किसी को इस विधि से प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता है ?
उत्तर-विशिष्ट संहनन आदि के अभाव के कारण वर्तमान में साधारण तप का प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता है और उसके आगे छेद और मूल (नई दीक्षा) प्रायश्चित्त भी दिया जाता है किन्तु उक्त परिहार तप का प्रायश्चित्त नहीं दिया जाता है।
वीर निर्वाण के बाद सैकड़ों वर्षों तक परिहार तप प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता रहा । छेद सूत्रों के मूल पाठ में अनेक जगह पारिहारिक साधु सम्बन्धी अनेक विधान हैं तथा भाष्य ग्रन्थों में भी विस्तृत वर्णन मिलता है।
पारिहारिक व अपारिहारिक का कदाचित् एक साथ गोचरी निकलने का योग बन जाय तो एक को रुक कर दूसरे को अलग हो जाना चाहिए ।
सूत्र में अपारिहारिक के लिए प्रायश्चित्त कहा गया है। पारिहारिक भी यदि ऐसा करे तो उसे भी प्रायश्चित्त पाता है, यह भी समझ लेना चाहिए । चतुर्थ उद्देशक का सारांश
