उत्तर-इसका समाधान दृष्टांत द्वारा समझाया जाता है।
जिस प्रकार पशु स्वयं चरने जाने के लिये समर्थ होता है तब तक उसे जाने के लिये गांव के बाहर निकाल दिया जाता है । यदि वह अशक्त होता है तो गोपालक उसे घर पर ही घास आदि लाकर देता है । इसी प्रकार पारिहारिक की सेवा के संबंध में समझना चाहिये।
प्रश्न-इस प्रकार का कठोर तप और कठोर व्यवहार उसके साथ क्यों किया जाता है ?
उत्तर-जो जैसा दोष सेवन करता है उसे वैसा ही प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता है। दोषशुद्धि एवं आत्मशुद्धि के लिये स्वेच्छा से स्वीकार करने पर परिहार तप दिया जाता है । इससे अन्य साधुओं को भी यह ध्यान रहे या भय रहे कि इस तरह के दोष का ऐसा प्रायश्चित्त होता है। इसके अतिरिक्त इस तप के करने पर कर्मों की निर्जरा भी होती है।
प्रश्न-आलोचना प्रायश्चित्त तो एकांत में किया जाता है अतः स्पष्ट जानकारी कैसे हो सकती है । जिससे दूसरे साधु भयभीत बन कर वैसे दोषों से सावधान रहें ?
उत्तर-इस प्रायश्चित्त वहन रूप स्थापना में स्थापित करने के पूर्व सामूहिक रूप से श्रमण समुदाय को सूचना दी जाती है और दोषसेवन की पूरी जानकारी दी जाती है, पूर्ण स्पष्टीकरण करने के बाद उसके साथ व्यवहार बंद करके उसे आत्मशुद्धि के लिये निवृत्त किया जाता है । वह आचार्य
अधीनता में व आज्ञा में गिना जाता है। तप वहन के एक दिन पूर्व स्वयं प्राचार्य उसके साथ जाकर उसे (मनोज्ञ-विगय युक्त) आहार दिलवाते हैं।
__ इस प्रकार आदर पूर्वक चतुर्विध संघ को जानकारी देकर यह प्रायश्चित्त देकर इस प्रायश्चित्त के निमित्त तप प्रारम्भ किया जाता है । उस पारिहारिक के प्राचार की तप की तथा कब किस परिस्थिति में क्या क्या व्यवहार किया जा सकता है, इत्यादि की पूरी जानकारी श्रमणसमुदाय को दी जाती है ।
___ प्रश्न-पारणे में भी विगय न लेने से तप करने का उत्साह मंद हो जाए तो बिना इच्छा के भी वह तप करना जरूरी होता है ?
उत्तर-आचार्य सारी स्थिति की जानकारी करके यथायोग्य कर सकते हैं। उसकी सारणा, वारणा करना या प्रायश्चित्त करने के लिए उत्साह बढ़ाना आदि सारा उत्तरदायित्व प्राचार्य का होता है । आवश्यक समझे तो वे विगय की छूट भी दे सकते हैं और विशेष संतुष्टि के लिए साथ में जाकर आहार भी दिलाते हैं।
प्रश्न-छोटे-मोटे सभी दोषों का ऐसा ही प्रायश्चित्त होता है ?
उत्तर-नहीं, उत्तरगुण सम्बन्धी दोषों के प्रायश्चित्त में तथा मूलगुण सम्बन्धी जघन्य, मध्यम प्रायश्चित्त में केवल तप प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता है। मूलगुण सम्बन्धी उत्कृष्ट दोष सेवन के प्रायश्चित्त में मासिक यावत् छःमासी “परिहार तप" का प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता है। वह भी योग्य को दिया जाता है। योग्य न होने पर साधारण तप दिया जाता है, तथा साध्वो को साधारण तप का ही प्रायश्चित्त दिया जाता है। परिहार तप का प्रायश्चित्त नहीं । दिया जाता है।
