[ Surya Prajnapti Sutra ]
The sun travels one sixty-fourth of a yojana in one muhurta, in the northern direction.
Therefore, for a human being on earth, the sun's visual appearance (chakkhuphaasam) occurs after traveling 32,000 yojanas, minus one-fourth, plus sixty-fourths of a yojana, and twenty-seven parts of a hundred.
Therefore, the day is eighteen muhurtas, minus one-fourth of a muhurta, and the night is twelve muhurtas, minus one-fourth of a muhurta.
Thus, as the sun enters the different mandalas (regions), it travels from one mandala to the next, covering eighteen sixty-fourths of a yojana in each mandala, in one muhurta. As it travels, it gradually increases its speed, reaching a speed of eighty-five yojanas, and then gradually decreases its speed, covering the entire mandala in four muhurtas.
When the sun covers the entire mandala in four muhurtas, it travels five thousand yojanas, plus two hundred and eighty-eight sixty-fourths of a yojana, in one muhurta.
Therefore, for a human being on earth, the sun's visual appearance (chakkhuphaasam) occurs after traveling 73,000 yojanas, plus two hundred and twenty-one sixty-fourths of a yojana.
Therefore, the day is eighteen muhurtas, when the sun is at its highest point (uttamakatthapatte), and the night is twelve muhurtas.
This is the duration of the six months, and this is the duration of the six months of the sun's journey. This is the duration of the year, and this is the duration of the year of the sun's journey.
