**79. Q.** How is the moon's increase and decrease? Please explain.
**A.** It is 75 muhurtas and 30 bavatthi bhagas of a muhurta.
**Q.** How is the moon's increase and decrease in the dark fortnight?
**A.** In the dark fortnight, the moon increases for 412 muhurtas and 36 bavatthi bhagas of a muhurta. For example, in the first day, the first part increases, in the second day, the second part increases, and so on, until the 15th day, the 15th part increases. At the end, the moon becomes full. In the remaining time, the moon becomes both full and waning. This is called Amavasya.
Similarly, in the first fortnight, on Amavasya, the dark fortnight begins. In the dark fortnight, the moon increases for 412 muhurtas and 36 bavatthi bhagas of a muhurta. For example, in the first day, the first part increases, in the second day, the second part increases, and so on, until the 15th day, the 15th part increases. At the end, the moon becomes waning. In the remaining time, the moon becomes both full and waning. This is called Purnima.
Similarly, in the second fortnight, it is Purnima.
**80. Q.** How many Purnimas and Amavasyas are there in one Yuga?
**A.** There are 48 Purnimas and 48 Amavasyas. There are 48 Kasina ragas, 48 Kasina viragas, 24 fortnights, and 24 Kasina raga-viraga fortnights. In 5 years, there are 24 such fortnights.
