## From the Tenth (Dasham) onwards
[From the Fifth (Pancham) onwards] the number of constellations (Nakshatra) in the families (Kula, Uvakula, Kulovakula) is 37. How are these families (Kula, Uvakula, Kulovakula)? Here is the explanation.
There are twelve families (Kula), twelve sub-families (Uvakula), and four combined families (Kulovakula). The twelve families (Kula) are:
1. Dhanishtha Kula
2. Uttarabhadrapada Kula
3. Ashwini Kula
4. Krittika Kula
5. Mrigashira Kula
6. Pushya Kula
7. Magha Kula
8. Uttara Phalguni Kula
9. Chitra Kula
10. Visakha Kula
11. Mula Kula
12. Uttarashadha Kula
The twelve sub-families (Uvakula) are:
1. Shravana Uvakula
2. Purvaphalguni Uvakula
3. Revati Uvakula
4. Bharani Uvakula
5. Rohini Uvakula
6. Punarvasu Uvakula
7. Ashlesha Uvakula
8. Purva Phalguni Uvakula
9. Hasta Uvakula
10. Satabhisha Uvakula
11. Jyeshta Uvakula
12. Purvashadha Uvakula
The four combined families (Kulovakula) are:
1. Abhijit Kulovakula
2. Satabhisha Kulovakula
3. Ashwini Kulovakula
4. Anuradha Kulovakula
1. The question in the Surya Prajnapti is incomplete, therefore, the words "Uvakula, Kulovakula" have been added in brackets to complete it. In the Jambudvipa Prajnapti, Vakh. 7, Sutra 161, the question is as follows:
> Q. How many, O Venerable One, are the families (Kula)? How many are the sub-families (Uvakula)? How many are the combined families (Kulovakula)?
> A. Gotama! There are twelve families (Kula), twelve sub-families (Uvakula), and four combined families (Kulovakula).
The rest of the text is similar to the Surya Prajnapti, but in this question-answer Sutra of the Jambudvipa Prajnapti, after the names of the twelve constellations (Nakshatra), there is a verse indicating the characteristics of the Kula, etc., which is also quoted in the commentary of the Surya Prajnapti, and this verse is quoted in the present collection. If the compiler of the Jambudvipa Prajnapti had given this verse at the beginning or end of the present Sutra, it would have been more appropriate.
**Verse:**
> The durations of the months are the families (Kula), the sub-families (Uvakula) are below them.
> The combined families (Kulovakula) are Abhijit, Satabhisha, Ashwini, and Anuradha.
- Jambudvipa Prajnapti, Vakh. 7, Sutra 161
> "What are the characteristics of the Kula, etc.? It is said: The durations of the months - the completions of the months - are the families (Kula). What is the meaning here? The constellations by which the completions of the months are usually brought about, and which are named after the months, are known as families (Kula)."
> "The constellations below the families (Kula), starting with Shravana, are the sub-families (Uvakula). The constellations that are near the families (Kula) are the sub-families (Uvakula) by courtesy."
> "Those that are below the families (Kula) and the sub-families (Uvakula) are the combined families (Kulovakula)."
- Jambudvipa Prajnapti, Commentary.
